There's a word that describes what he's doing, which is circumlocution & it's means where you cant find the perfect word(s) to articulate the point or concept your describing & so you use lots of other words to do the same & is probably, in his case, due to the language barrier but soo adorable!
Funnily enough, there's phrase which describes the perfect word, phrase or term: the 'mot jüste, '!
