The reason it's so popular in Hawaii:
As we know, it was originally given to soldiers and sailors on the bases during WWII to supplement rations. They made their way off the bases and into the islanders' diets. How? Well, out of necessity. Hawaii had/has A LOT of Japanese people living there. So many it was impossible to put them in camps. Because they were viewed as a threat, the government decided to make it illegal for them to fish. This put a dent in the local fishing industry and limited what they could eat protein wise. So, because it was so plentiful, they turned to that.
