7 Stoic Ways to Escape the Chains of the World

When we look at the human condition, we notice that most of us are entirely controlled by a world outside of us. When we get what we want from it, we’re happy. But when it’s taken away from us, we’re sad. The praise people give us uplifts us, but their dislike makes us miserable. The more we want something, the more we’re willing to sacrifice to get it. And the more we oppose something, the higher the price we’re ready to pay to avoid it.

These chains of desire and aversion, love and hate, of like and dislike, leave us fearful and open to manipulation by shaming and blaming, the appeal of large companies, political parties, cults, and other external forces that want something from us. And thus, the world governs us like a donkey rider with a carrot on a stick, which most of us follow from birth to death, like the obedient cattle we are. But what if we decide to reject the carrot? What if we choose to escape the system?

When I was young I’ve always thought the greatest freedom I can get is to do anything that I want. But as I grow older I realised that the greatest freedom is the freedom from all of these. Fear of the uncertainty, thinking of others opinion about us, lamenting on the things that people do (and don’t do) to us. And so on. I’ve still got a long way to go but I’ll keep going 😉

Marcus Aurelius... the greatest of the Roman emperors! A man who practiced what he preached. We can learn so much from the Stoics.

Broke my foot 6 weeks ago. I’ve learned so much about myself, about endurance, and the benefits of hitting rock bottom. So many challenges and stresses to deal with alone. There’s a lot of freedom in being forced to stop caring about things beyond your control.

I took a few months without watching/listening to Einzelganger’s videos. I come back to hear exactly what I needed to hear in my current life situation. It just goes to show that these beliefs are timeless and are very malleable to many different situations. I love Einzelganger’s content!

Energy vampires exist. If you are around a toxic person or situation, make a plan and get out.
Don’t make excuses or engage in mental gymnastics. Stoicism works in some cases and in some circumstances it doesn’t. That’s why we have critical thinking skills. Use what works and get out of negative situations.

Regarding loss of reputation, dealing with toxic people, etc. a nice neighbour told me to hold my head high, and I do. I smile and in the beginning it was difficult but now it's natural and sincere. I smile, I hold my head high, I am friendly and I take care of myself, I no longer neglect my health, my weight or my appearance. Now I dress well and look well - the toxic people must be wondering what wonderful turn my life has taken! And I even sing, to let the bullies know that I choose happiness. I've also reconnected with people, even though they are not close friends, it's important to have some people around you even if you're an introvert like me. I talk to people when I'm out and about, even short conversations add up to feeling less alone.

Whether you like it or not, external circumstances are, by definition, beyond our control.

The Stoics simply find a way to accept that and still move forward...

5:16 This is a tough pill to swallow but once you do it relieves the anxiety and overthinking that comes along with trying to please people💁🏽‍♂️

After watching depressing news, I always end my video watching sessions with some of your content even if I've seen it before, in order to center my mind and spirit. You've become a part of my meditation, and for that I cannot thank you enough. You've also helped me explain a lot of philosophy to my wife that I have a hard time expressing with my own words. I look forward to the next thing you post, always. Cheers!

Outstanding. Thank you. My favorite: If something is endurable, don't complain about it. If something is unendurable, why bother to complain about it.
