Lesson plans are a mere guideline; get from A to B by the end of the term, but they should be readily abandoned to take advantage of any and all teachable moments that occur in a classroom.

The fact that admin. rarely if ever look at teachers’ lesson plans after the teachers turn them in by administrative requirement makes lesson planning itself pointless.

I think a scope and sequence is appropriate. But lesson plans for the semester or year? Then you cannot respond to student needs. "Sorry kids - I thought we would be in this place back in September. I know it's February and you haven't mastered X skill yet, but we gotta keep going! It's the plans!"

Every teacher works differently. Some will be more organized, others more spontaneous when it comes to planning. No one way it better.

If the principal wanted to walk into my classroom and look at my planbook, fine. But requiring submitting lesson plans way in advance is moronic. How can I plan next week if I don't even know whether the kids really got what we did the week before? Plus, having to include the standards being addressed and materials used, well come on! I remember being treated like a cog in a machine, unappreciated and undervalued. I am so glad I am retired now.

No teacher who has proven that he/ she knows how to teach should have to submit lesson plans. And WHO in their right mind wants to read through a teacher’s lesson plans???

I worked as a summer group leader at my neighborhood Boys & Girls Club. At most, we were allowed to lesson plan for the week. And we often came up with it on the day.

Why do they want EVERYBODY doing LPs when that’s not what works best for every teacher? All I need is a standard and a timer! 😂
PLUS, All admin and “concerned parents” do is use that lesson plan as a weapon! I will always lean into a teachable moment over a script.

Better for the students to be confident and grounded in what they have learned than to touch upon a plethora of random add-ons

I didn't mind having a schedule of what I was going to do for the day. I'm a planner, so that came naturally to me, but I didn't like the over explaining I had to do with the lesson plans I was expected to have on my desk each day in the event an administrator came to the room.

Wow - In nyc it's illegal for admin to ask for lesson plans for a whole wk, month, or semester.

As a young educator, I find lesson plans extremely useful as skill building tools. I notice a substantial drop off in teaching quality when I don’t have some sort of written plan.

In Serbia teachers don't plan lessons. Department of education plans them on a country level.
