I’ve long been grateful to Matthew Flinders for promoting the name Australia because I feel that we wouldn’t be nearly as popular if we had ended up using the Terra part of the Latin name. Imagine the chant that would make Terra! Terra! Terra! Oi! Oi! Oi!

Vanuatu was formerly the New Hebrides, which was jointly administered by Britain and France until it gained independence in 1980.

🔹️12:15 Yes, Rob, we learnt in Jr High School that the name Australia is derived from "Terra Australis" or Southern Land.

I knew most of that but not that bit about Vanuatu. It's a popular holiday destination for Aussies.

Rob, speaking of "New" being assigned to place names, the former name of Vanuatu was the "New Hebrides". The name was used until the 1980's when Vanuatu gained independence. Cheers from Melbourne. Glenn

Like others mentioned in comments we knew or taught quite a bit of that history. Some I didn’t know. As for place names here, so many are named after places or people from the UK. Every time I watch UK Escape To The Country, I often hear more new names. Melbourne named after Lord Melbourne, we have Perth, Doncaster, Richmond, Windsor, Brighton, um - and stacks more. As for your shower and shave, I wasn’t expecting that and cracked up laughing and said to the screen - “pull the shower curtain over Rob” 😂

This was a really interesting video. Matthew Flinders was a really interesting dude from memory. Lots of things are named after him down here.

Also Vanuatu has some of the best beaches in the world. If you ever need a beyond beautiful beach holiday. That's where you go.

surprisingly, most australia`s are very proud to have a convict as an ancestor. when i reseached my family tree, i was disappointed to find out, there were no convicts in our family. we see convicts as character`s and cheeky fella`s. we like them.

When I went to school Matthew Flinders and James Cook were part of our lessons. We learned a lot of Australian history in the 70s including Aboriginal culture.

The first person to determine the size of Earth was Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who produced a surprisingly good measurement using a simple scheme that combined geometrical calculations with physical observations. Eratosthenes was born around 276 B.C.
He measured the distance between two places and calculated the angular displacement with shadow lengths.

The South land? It was Matthew Flinders ( memory from school days) that started using Australia.

Yes, Rob, as an Aussie we do learn something about the history of Australia and how it got its name. Well, our former PM may not have been listening as he apparently thought Captain Cook navigated Australia... even though there's a monument to Bass & Flinders in his own electorate 🙄. Fun fact: Matthew Flinders used to sail about with his cat, Trim, and Trim has quite a few statues of his own.
By the way, Vanuatu used to be called the New Hebrides and it's a popular tourist destination from Australia.

Well you're a long way from the islands of The South Pacific in England. There are Aussies from all over the world over here. I'm friends with a family where the Dad's from India and the Mum's from Tonga which is just east of New Zealand. She went to High School there. Their kids are some of the cutest I've ever seen. They're a Trilingual family with English, Punjabi and Tongan spoken at home 🏡.

After he finally got home to England, a dying Mathew Flinders wanted to call his book A Voyage to Australia, but Sir Joseph Banks, who was considered the authority on Australia because he visited with Cook, insisted that he use the name Terra Australis. Flinders did not live to see the name adopted. There is a river, a mountain range, a university and an electoral division named after Flinders, and a whole family of plants named after Banks. He named them himself. What a surprise. Before he sailed around Australia, Flinders and his friend George Bass sailed around Tasmania, proving that Tassie is an island. The stretch of water between Australia and Tasmania is called Bass Strait. You should check out the story of Flinders' cat, Trim, the first cat to circumnavigate Australia.

Australia is the largest country entirely within the southern hemisphere. Part of Brazil is north of the equator

You are so right Rob. The state I live in is Victoria, Australia. Most of our streets and states are named from
England.

Yes, it's essentially an Anglicised form of the Latin adjective australis, meaning 'southern'. The southern lights are the 'aurora australis'.
