Blackberry Key2: First Look (2018)

With a physical keyboard and a privacy focus, the Blackberry Key2 is a great phone...for certain people! Here are my thoughts on Blackberry's latest phone.

I was forced into Smartphones years ago; and only got one when my employer "insisted" and basically gave me my first Blackberry. My last BB OS was my indestructibly Q10; but it did not like Android apps so I needed to do something as my "smartphone" was getting closer in utility to my traditional cellphones of the past. In the end, when I saw the KEYone I figure it was my best bet to get some sort of satisfaction from Android as I did not like what people showed me with their Android or Apple OS devices. I had one day of terror and after that I found the KEYone just more and more a delight; it even had my "T-B" macros to avoid the endless scrolling I feared. The battery life is stunning, and the phone is never more that slightly warm, usually cool to the touch. The security is quite literally mind blowing as I was horrified by the spying these apps do and thank gawd for the Blackberry telling me about it and giving me direct access to the setting I need to look at. If I did not have this protection, I would have been blind to how even the camera and microphone (sensors) are being engaged by seeming "harmless apps" (sometime 100s of times a day). The KEY2 looks like they take things a step further with the brilliant new key to take full advantage of the shortcuts (without having to get back to the home screen) .. instant flipping with 52 key options. I also like the hardiness (I slammed my huge car hood down on mine and it somehow survived after noticing it sticking out 10 mins later); the better lighting in the keyboard is good news too .. the KEYone is not bad but I thought a tad better would be good sometimes when my eyes are tired. The KEYone - is like a good engine or transmission - it happens rarely as just the right elements need to come together and it is hard to plan - you just do not know until the production is rolling and you get feedback and only then find out if it was worth it. The KEYone is such a good combination .. with the KEY2 building nicely on it.
