From Wikipedia:
Tales of Mystery and Imagination is the debut album by the progressive rock group The Alan Parsons Project, released in 1976. The album's avant-garde soundscapes kept it from being a blockbuster, but the interesting lyrical and musical themes — retellings of horror stories and poetry by Edgar Allan Poe — attracted a small audience. The title of the album is taken from a popular title for Poe's macabre tales of the same name, Tales of Mystery & Imagination, first published in 1908 and many times since under this name. Critical reaction to the album was often mixed; for example, Rolling Stone's Billy Altman concluded that it mostly failed at reproducing Poe's tension and macabre fear, ending by claiming that "devotees of Gothic literature will have to wait for someone with more of the macabre in their blood for a truer musical reading of Poe's often terrifying works".

This album was released in the UK originally with a different name. Simply called The Alan Parsons Project, it was successful enough to achieve gold status but later that year the same album was released under the name of Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

A jewel of a concept album. I remember buying it when it debuted. I don't care what some snob critics said about this music. It's a masterpiece. Eric Woolfson (RIP)

The record, to a large degree, is the reason that I ended up a recording engineer. Pure brilliance.

I have been an Alan Parsons fan for many years and always hesitated to listen to this album. You might say, what kind of great fan does not listen to his band's debut album? The answer is that I was afraid of a massive letdown. Listening to it for the first time as I write and am just BLOWN AWAY. Pure art. The guitar riffs and changes on here, OMG! It took me along time to become comfortable with Turn of a Friendly Card, yet I would listen to this again without any effort.

I remember cruising the streets with friends listening to this album when it came out. I think it was by far their best album and it still blows me away.

I was 18 when this was released. This album is one of those few epic masterpieces that only gets better every time you listen to it. Alan Parsons worked with The Beatles and Pink Floyd. You probably have to know a little something when you help make "Dark Side Of The Moon". Very under rated and underappreciated album.

I always gravitated to the bands that others seem to miss, this is one of the finest.

I'm so grateful to have been around Radio Stations and Musicians from an Early Age...This Artist's First Record Really left such an Incredible Impact on Us having scored a listen in Advance before it was Released (radio station promo copy) it was as I Recall, a Gold Colored See-Thru Vinyl in a Deluxe Package...needless to say all these years later I Certainly would Refer to It's Contribution to Rock and Roll as a Technical Masterpiece fur any Group's Debut Record ! 25th of June, 1976.

My mother had this album on tape and I picked it up and played it in my car when driving through Phoenix, Az. on a hot still night in 1978. Life has never been the same ....

Masterpiece of progressiv Rock History! The golden 70s.... and first step into electronic musicworld, same like ELP, Manfred Mann, Yes, Crimson, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Deep Purple etc. The most creative work from Alan Parsons Project!

Alan Parsons another of the many musical gifts given to us mere mortals that are lucky enough to have heard his talents. Like many form this great explosive era there are few if any pieces like this by current popular musicians. Todays popular music seems to be for a generation of ADHA consumers.

The 70s were a time of musical innovation that just can't be matched. I played this album over and over and over, and I kick myself a little that I sold all my vinyl.

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether is what brought me to APP back in the 70s and I never left. APP is one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time.
