I thought one player DND would be super lame but I began a story with my dad as the player anyway. Never played, doesn't like fantasy, but has turned out to be really fun. A solo spy recruited and sent on a dangerous deep cover mission to uncover a far ranging conspiracy.

You could run it like a final fantasy game where the party are all npcs rp’d by you, but are controlled by the player in combat.

On the note of having NPC companions, I think having one permanent ally NPC in the form of a sidekick (a la Tasha's)is the best way to handle a single player campaign.

As it helps with action economy and making sure the always someone for the player to interact with. It's also better than running a DMPC as the sidekick classes are much weaker than their PC counterparts, so there's little risk of them overshadowing the player. They're also very simple, so the player could easily run both characters in combat

Did not know this was a thing... now I am thinking that, while a bit railroady, using the player's background suggestions, a DM could help a player build their character between session 0 and session 1 with a one player one shot... or even a two player one shot, if people are arriving already paired.

An other option is to allow the player to have multiple characters. It can be fun and allow them to explore different classes

Just had my first solo game with my sister last week, it was pretty fun. I'm now having trouble writing the next game cuz I'm not really sure how to start it since session 1 worked linda like a one shot, I hooked an event, I'm just not sure how tie things up now. I'm really excited to keep playing with her just the two of us, and maybe sometimes have a friend or two of hers in our table.
