Mayer really is a great guitar player. His pop stuff pays the bills I guess, but his blues playing is where he shines. He's been really good in some of Clapton's Crossroads festivals.

Slash sounds like Slash, that and the look are what makes him so iconic (although I have to say, I've rarely seen him improvise as poorly as he did here)....But Mayer simply always surprises me in these random appearances. He's very good at playing to the music/song, really true musicianship. It's funny by the way, I saw this video on Youtube in 2009, and everyone was hating on Mayer back then. Guess he's earned his stripes as well.

Not a fan of Mayer's music really but this is an example of a fire-breathing solo. Amazing work and a great talent.

The scary thing is and its been said by many famous players before, John Mayer probably doesn't even realise how good he actually is himself. fact is he has a magnificent ear for music and is an incredibly tasteful player, as well as being an out and out virtuoso. As great as Slash is, he is just a rock star. Mayer will always be on another level.

I’ve in recent years come to realize I always over rated slash, and underrated Mayer. Definitely come to appreciate and respect Mayer a lot in recent years

I would agree. Mayer's solo was more agressive and interesting rhythmically. Mayer definatly had better tone.
And I agree with the guy that said he's never heard Slash improv so poorly. Slash is usually better than this.
But to be honest, neither solo impressed me. I heard those two, I'd be like..."OK, shut up and let me hear Billy again!

I scoffed at the scoff at Slash like ugh youtubers..! And then I listened and realized you were being very kind.. maybe he was hammered?

Yeah my opinion. Two guitar players went to see zztop and got to go on stage and jam with them. I don't think it was a contest. Just a jam .

Unfair advantage to JM...he's a blues player to the core, and WAY better than most give him credit for.

I've had the pleasure of watching John live 3 or 4 times and he's been great each time, but there was one where he played what had to be at least a 10 minute solo and my friend, a guitar player of a completely different style who had come with us to the concert, looked at me like "holy shit, I didn't realize he was this good." As for me, it was some of the best playing I'd ever heard. It was up there with some of the clips on youtube of SRV, Hendrix, BB and the like. I wish I could go back in time and listen to it live again...

My ear says Mayer 'won' the duel, but could you just imagine how awesome that would have been to see live? wow....

I wish I was good enough to have an opinion.
