Homo erectus (Sensu Lato and Sensu Stricto)

Continuing with genus Homo, we reach Homo erectus. These were our direct ancestors, but it can get a little tricky describing them. We can discuss sensu lato or sensu stricto, which refer to the broadest definition and narrowest definition of the species, respectively. Some anthropologists have proposed breaking this species up to also include Homo ergaster and Homo georgicus. Let's take a look at some of the specimens that guide this line of inquiry!

I've never gotten that deep into human evolution, so learning more about different human species is still absolutely fascinating. Thanks, Dave!

5:09 Small correction: rather than head lice and pubic lice, it seems it was actually head lice and _body_ lice that diverged because of clothing. I think pubic lice is the one that's more closely related to gorilla lice.

If I had a time machine, I'd love to know what was going on with the group that crossed the ice bridge into North America. How shit was that journey? What kept them going? What were they thinking? How did they react to seeing NA megafauna for the first time? So wild, man.

Best talk Thank you. Hoping you will make more videos on the latest homonid/human ancestor science. It had become so complex.... and exiting!

4:57 Boreholes are done by sea snails which commonly drill holes in sea shells (mostly clams) with their radula as these are predator snails., it is important to note the size and the shape of holes which can vary in nature, sometimes they are in the most "human made" place possible on a clam, this means that can be a coincidence or they have picked the shells that already have bore holes in them deliberately. Look up moon snail holes for example.

Amazing stuff. Kinda mind boggling to think how much of our history got lost and has to be rediscovered.

I thought 'hominin' instead of 'hominid' was a typo but it turns out it's not:
Hominid – the group consisting of all modern and extinct Great Apes (that is, modern humans, chimpanzees, gorillas and orang-utans plus all their immediate ancestors).
Hominin – the group consisting of modern humans, extinct human species and all our immediate ancestors (including members of the genera Homo, Australopithecus, Paranthropus and Ardipithecus).

Doesn't lower sexual dimorphism also indicate that both sexes of the species is participating in more of the same tasks and behaviors, as well as females mating with multiple males?

Hi Dave, I found your channel because I was trying to understand how anyone could think the earth is flat. Glad I did, love this channel and enjoy your style of teaching. I feel a little smarter after watching your channel 😂subscribed

When I was in junior high school, I did prehistoric man for three years in a row for my class science projects-made little diorama boxes, of the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and neolithic era- and I made jaw bones out of clay- of Australopithecus, robustus, Neaderthals, and homo erectus - I remember my dad‘s friend came over to the house. He was a dentist and he looked at my job bones and said they’re pretty damn good. 😅😂. Oh, I forgot I also made a model of Olduvai gorge- and a Dr Leaky made of clay with a little hat
