This must be an "experience" for those who don't cook meals every day of the week lol

Dunno about cooking a whole steak, but I love going to Korean BBQ, where you continuously grill and eat the chunks of meat, as well as eat the side dishes.

There's a chinese place near me that brings you raw skewers. Beef, chicken. Already marinated. And a tiny grill that's like a vase with a grill on top and burning alcohol underneath.
It's fun. Tastes great, too. But... those are appetizers. They don't make me drop my eggs in soup, fry my rice or moo-goo my gai-pan.

"Sir this is a Korean BBQ, you cook everything yourself"

Yea I could understand if it was smaller meats, or precut, but a whole slab and you're supposed to cut and cook it yourself? If I wanted to prep & cook my food, I coulda done that at home for a WHOLE lot cheaper than whatever they're charging.

I feel like this was conceptualized by someone who liked their steaks blue

I feel like a lot of people don't understand the concept and culture behind these types of restaurants.

It's not about going out just to have a plate of food for yourself, it's about being with friends and family for longer then the 20-30 minutes it takes order and eat your food. It a lot of E. Asia, eating is a communal thing that can last for hours and everyone is splitting all the dishes. In Korea, BBQ, Hot Pot, Tteokboki, anything at a Pocha is pretty much bulk ordered for the table. Whether it's a large tray of meat for bbq, large bowl of ramen/stew, kimchi pancake, ect.

It's about bonding over (what should be the joy of sharing) food and drinks while decompressing from a long day of work or study. Food isn't seen as a chore in most other countries/cultures. But, to be honest, these types of restaurants in the US are a bit expensive for getting the 'experience' imo, because they're a specialty. In Korea, a full service restaurant tends to be the more expensive one.

They give you a 755 degree rock surface to cook it on. Takes seconds. It comes with instructions that say 45 seconds is well done. To give you an idea of how long it takes. I think your sides will be fine.

Edit: to hopefully end some of the weird pointless arguments happening over this .. you're not supposed to cook the whole thing at once. You slice it into strips and cook each strip to your liking. The idea is, you get freshly cooked meat (they also serve chicken and seafood this way) with every bite. It's just a gimmick to add a little entertainment to your meal. It's no different then a fondue place. They'll cook it for you if you want of course.

Edit 2: lava rock stays at 755 degrees for up to 30 mins. I'm sure they'll bring you another rock if you somehow managed to take that long to eat one steak or whatever 😂

If anybody is interested, the rock is usually super hot like 700-1000 degrees, they cook it to your desire likeness in like 3 mins totally time. So your sides don’t go cold. Most restaurants charge a lot more for this just base on gimmick. Food tastes the same unless they use a salt rock version, which enhances the steak with more salt lmao

We have a restaurant here in South Africa called Spur and me and my uncle always get the hot rock steak. It's a fun way to eat your steak having it perfect just the way you like it. Also if you order some vegetables with it and make some spinach and butternut pancakes on the hot rock.

Been to these places several times. I never had an issue cooking my steak. It’s kind of awesome.

Black rock bar and grille is unique. They got some of the best sauces for your steak serve big portioned sides, and that rock its sitting on is already cooking the steak. You just have to cut it up into smaller bits to cook it faster. I was skeptical the first time i went, but my mind was blown by the time i left. 100% worth giving a shot.

There used to be a Portuguese restaurant near me that used to do this. (Covid killed them)
They just called it Steak on a Rock. It’s a raw steak served on a 900 degree chunk of granite, and you slice and cook it to your exact liking PER BITE. You want to show it the heat, you can. You want shoe leather? You’d better not. But you can.
It was my girlfriend’s favorite dish there because she likes her cow still mooing.
I’ve had it a couple times, I’m not quite still mooing, but that’s a damn good way to serve steak.
She later went on to discover the joys of beef tartare. I must admit, cow sashimi is not bad.

Ok so I’ve actually been to that steakhouse several times and it’s really good, the way you do it is you cut off and cook each bite of steak so that every bite is freshly cooked from start to finish, you would then just intermittently dip into your side dishes as you normally would. They’re mostly in Michigan from what I’ve seen.
