Wittgenstein on Rules & Private Language

Some relevant quotes:

"But how can a rule show me what I have to do at this point? Whatever I do is, on some interpretation, in accord with the rule...Any interpretation still hangs in the air along with what it interprets, and cannot give it any support. Interpretations by themselves do not determine meaning." Wittgenstein

"This was our paradox: no course of action could be determined by a rule, because any course of action can be made out to accord with the rule." Wittgenstein

"To think one is obeying a rule is not to obey a rule. Hence it is not possible to obey a rule 'privately': otherwise thinking one was obeying a rule would be the same thing as obeying it." Wittgenstein

Contemporary artists attempt to craft a “private” language, not usually without some tethers to social systems of thought and practice, but nonetheless that is often their objective.

Ahhh, so it's Muddy Waters' fault. Interesting take.

So would Wittgenstein disagree with a Buddhist disciple sariputra or prophet Muhammad about these language games? :)

Who is Bryan Magee talking with in this piece? I don't see a name mentioned in the description.

Yes but then people misinterpret rules and language all the time too. You can say something to someone but if you are trying to be manipulative and they reject you on the basis of not just what you say but your intentions behind the words well then you need realize not everyone has the same perceptions.
