#SETI #UAP
This brain trust of SETI experts was hosted in February of 2020, back when live, in-studio conversations happened, and discussions of alien artifacts and UAPs was fringe science. The discussion includes James Benford's strategy for finding ETI artifacts and a proposition for both passive and active observations by optical and radio listening, radar imaging and launching probes. A debate on the implications of our own technosignatures. And what if we find nothing? A profound result: suggesting that, perhaps, no ET intelligence has yet come to look at Earth, or perhaps other civilizations are simply not as curious as we, good at concealing their activities, or simply lost to deep time.

Paul Davies is Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science at Arizona State University. His research spans cosmology, astrobiology and theoretical physics. He has made important contributions to quantum field theory in curved spacetime, with applications to inflationary cosmology and black holes. He was among the first to champion the possibility that microbial life could be transferred between Mars and Earth in impact ejecta. He is the author of 28 books, including most recently The Eerie Silence: Renewing Our Search for Alien Intelligence.

Mat Kaplan was the host of Planetary Radio from the Planetary Society from its' 2002 premiere through 2022. He was a Planetary Society staff member for more than 15 years, He hosts live events for Southern California Public Radio called NEXT, and frequently serves as moderator or speaker at space and science gatherings.

Will we find alien technology in our solar system or in another solar system?

It’s about damn time intellectuals outside of myself and also people derided as “fringe theorists” started discussing this topic that has deserved more attention and consideration for decades.

I am beginning to wonder if Dr. Fermi didn't already know where "they" were. Perhaps it was just a facetious question from one who witnessed Trinity firsthand.

The surprising thing isn't that 3.8 billion years ago a complex organic molecule stumbled onto replication, but that terrestrial life has survived all subsequent attempts by nature to wipe it out.

Mat Kaplan deserves to be in the title. He is the reason Planetary Radio was one of my top-favorite podcasts.

Drake equation is steady-state, and doesn't account for the delays in evolution, etc. Since Sol formed during the biggest burst of star formation in the Universe and time is distance it would be unlikely to spot other civs nearby.

Listening to this conversation, an old adage comes to mind. We don't know what we don't know. Of course it might help if we stopped completely ignoring the elephant in the room. If UAPs are real, why not a peep from these guys? Where is the "curiosity"? .

As usual you have a great podcast.

1. What was the function of the protein that was first coded by RNA or DNA from which a selection could be made?
2. If the fewest genes that a cell can have to sustain life is around 200 but it has to have additional DNA to have reproductive function how can RNA or DNA have primacy ?
3. If a flatworm can be multiploidy and maintain function and morphology how does DNA have primacy?
4. How is it that a cockroach and rats can reproduce, after nuclear radiation, with mutations such that they become multi ploidy in order to maintain morphology and function and RNA or DNA have primacy or a selective function?
5. Why are a dog and a dingo or completely different genetic plants nearly identical? To what are they “converging “?
