Bunker Fuels Used In Shipping. All You Need To Know

Bunker Fuels are consumed in enormous quantities to power the cargo ships across the oceans. In this episode we continue to focus on commodities and in particular, we look at the origins of today’s bunker fuels and what was used previously. We look also at the types of fuel in use today before discussing the potential fuels of the future and alternative propulsion which will assist in reducing the need for such fuels, Richard Watts, Founder, HR Maritime.

I am a bunker tankerman (pic) in New Orleans. We use 30, 000 barrel barges and tow boats to fuel ships with MGO, VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil), and RMG 380 (HFO)

8:19 Yeah, so 5 years later they still get to use oil, whereas people are being forced to use EVs. Remember, a car running on Gasoline burns just 20-40 metric tons of gasoline in 300, 000 miles (that’s more than the distance between earth and moon), but that consumption over about 20 years is less than a quarter of what these ships use in a day, and gasoline is a much cleaner fuel than what these ships use.

Only thing I have known working in the crude oil industry sector is that the sulfur content has been reduced in bunker fuels in 2020 or they have to use some type of scrubbers. I know in ports it is getting more popular to draw power from some of the host ports because they can and do run more efficient and cleaner burning generators to power the ships. I speculate that that has nothing to do with this accident. Thank you Juan, good story and awesome visual aids!

Would have liked to have seen some numbers documenting the popularity and the market penetration of the alternatives. Omitted, for probably good reasons, was small nuclear reactors.

I've really taken away a lot from this man's ''commodity brief'' presentations, especially when it comes to the marine transport business. His discussions on shipping documents have also been very valuable to me, especially because I am a trainee in international trade and was very new to the topic in the beginning. I would definitely enjoy to see more of commodity brief.

I came here looking for a concise explanation of shipping fuels and their emissions. I’ve left satisfied. 🙏🏼
