Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was a renowned theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author, known for his work on black holes and his popular science books.

Born in Oxford, England, Hawking showed early academic promise. He studied physics at University College, Oxford, before moving to Cambridge for his graduate studies in cosmology. In 1963, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating neurodegenerative disease. Given a prognosis of only a few years to live, Hawking defied expectations and continued his work for decades.

His landmark book, *A Brief History of Time* (1988), brought complex concepts of cosmology to the general public and became a bestseller. Hawking's contributions to understanding black holes, especially the theory that black holes emit radiation (now known as Hawking radiation), and his work on the nature of the universe, including the idea of the multiverse, cemented his place as a leading physicist.

Despite his physical limitations, Hawking remained active in research, writing, and public speaking until his death in 2018. His life and work left a lasting legacy in both science and popular culture.
