I know this is 9 years old, but how is the shape builder tool better than pathfinder? I've been an AI user since Illustrator 88! And some habits are hard to break. I still like using pathfinder with Option (?) to keep the closed paths editable. And it was just last week I used Live Paint tool, which was pretty cool. Weird interface for it, IMHO. Wasn't your telephone number in an old version of AI?

I'm surprised that you didn't just use the Shape Builder Tool instead of making the A in two pieces and moving pieces to the back/front etc.
