Elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council in Assam will be held next week, a region that has come a long way from its violent battle for statehood, resolved in January this year with a comprehensive peace accord with the militant group NDFB.

The elections to be held in 40 seats on 7 and 10 December are being seen as the semi-finals to the 2021 assembly polls in Assam, only six months away.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is only trying to meet the BJP’s long term goals -- first a congress mukt north east, next a single party majority.  So, after wooing away two of top leaders, BJP has snapped ties with ex-militant Hagrama Mohilary whose party BPF won 20 seats last time and BJP just one.
