Today we look at one of the most blatant cheats I've seen and talk about why cheating is on the rise and how we can stop it.

The crazy part is cheating in a feature match. You have to be extremely comfortable cheating to get to that point.

If WotC isn't willing to pay for judges, tournament organizers should start allowing proxies at their events.

The guy, wearing black clothes, knows he'll will cheat on camera and decides to go with a bright turquoise sleeve for his deck... genius!

90s cheaters be like "I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for that Meddling Mage"

That card swap was so sloppy it's funny. An easy fix here is to DQ anyone who takes their cards past the edge of the table. Treat it like Blackjack or Poker or any card game, really.

I was at Worlds' Barcelona when they announced the Judge Academy thing. I wasn't judging at the event, but was considering reinstating my Level 2 status, so I got to see the presentation. It boiled down to "yeah, we're not taking care of the judge program anymore. We made a *for-profit* organization (the lady said that making it non-profit or similar would be 'against company policy') to take care of that, so you have to PAY to work as a judge now! ISN'T THAT GRAND?". I was absolutely flabbergasted. I first became a judge around 2013 and have never seen the program go anywhere except downhill. WotC had always treated judges as an inconvenience they've had to put up with.

Instead of banning him they will picture him on a slight of hand reprint instead.

There should be no tolerance for this. Permanent ban forever. They are super tolerant in 40k and it is out of control, with cheaters coming back and winning big GT's and being caught cheating again.

True story. I'm sitting in a pod with the most pubstomping "bracket 6 pilot" in our LGS. Over 20 games I've never managed to beat him. He has a massive reputation within our community and is near constantly "poked" by everyone, even the shop keeps. One day I exiled one of his best creatures with an o-ring effect, Most people will put the card aside so they don't forget to put it back in play, but he sets it sideway under his graveyard. Alright kinda weird but I can track it. Right in the middle of my turn I saw him reach over and turn it strait so it was part of his graveyard. Wouldn't have cared except he was playing graveyard recursion.

WotC tries to charge its fanbase a thousand bucks for 60 cards you can't play with but won't float the bill for some proper judges. WotC sucks.

had a guy cheating at FNM, took him out and he fully denied it. Came back next morning saying sorry and explaining himself and then goes and cheats at a draft drawing more cards... i cant...

When I got back into Magic a few years ago i tried my hand at a Pioneer tournament. I just missed top 8 and after my last match a bystander told me that I had been cheated by a player not taking 2 damage from thoughtsieze purposely. I'm not really sure, they guy played super fast and it was really overwhelming and several people said he's a known cheater. All i know is that it left a really bad taste in my mouth and I just don't play tournaments anymore.

I was Magic’s youngest judge in 1997 at 16. I was a level 1 until the judge program was ended. I haven’t had an easy time getting back into it due to the fragmentation of it now.

Also related, I played in the Junior Super Series championship in 98. I saw so much unpunished cheating that I flat out stopped playing at that level until very recently. It really jaded my view on the game for a long time. So yeah, it was rampant in the 90s and I don’t want to see it come back.

Wizards need to own up and bring their own judge program back (and pay us fairly this time). A centralized system is what’s needed here, especially if formerly banned for life players are returning. That should NEVER happen.

Thanks for sharing this info and keep outing these jerks. They don’t deserve the chance to play at events and ruin it for everyone playing fairly.

Its sad that the Cheater gets away with a dq because thats give WOTC the possibility to admit - "there is no cheating problem". Thats the state WOTC is in and thats why MTG is on a poor state.
