I like the way that Shadowdark allows thieves - remarkably - to be half-decent and non-hipeless at doing thief-stuff right from the off - instead of making thiefan unstartable career but an OK one when you've been in ut for a while.

Remember the Short Sword is not a finesse weapon. So you use your strength to hit. The only melee finesse weapon is the Dagger

Agree SD thief is a capable OSR thief, but I think LotFP thief (called "specialist" in that game) gives it a run for its money. Have you checked that one out? Have fun playing Annie the Orphan Barbarian!!

I recommend reading Christopher Buehlman’s ‘Blacktongue Thief’ for wonderful thief class ideas and game flavor that will fit in your Sd setting. Literally the best thief character since the Gray Mouser in Fritz Leiber’s Lankhmar books. 👍🏼

As far as I know, your stats do not cap at 18, only the modifier caps at +4. So you wouldn't loose the point if you put +2 to Dex. But even with Dex 28 your modifier would still only be +4.

Ahhh...the old-school Thief class. Just enough skill and abilities to get lots of use in a party...with low enough AC and HP to get you killed in the first encounter. It was always my go-to character for some reason. My first PC to roll-up was a thief back in 1982. Great rolls here tho...

When it comes to ShadowDark Halflings, I wonder how many interpret the invisibility as literally "turning invisible and vanishing from sight" compared to making themselves so inconspicuous that they are *effectively* invisible.
Personally, I prefer the latter option.

You don't get a dice for your level until level 2. (It says round down, half of 1 is .5 rounded down is 0.)

Love the character and the simplicity of making them.

Keep in mind that Short Sword is not a Finesse weapon, so STR would be req'd.
Get several daggers.

At my table, PCs with good stats like Annie's meet the most unlikely of ends. How will Annie be consumed by ShadowDark?

It is not the deepest criticsim, but organizing the weapons in alphabetical order rather than range or scaling damage was truly painful to me.
