What is the purpose of a double pot?

Andy, I am a potter from here in Taos, New Mexico, applying the techniques of Pueblo Pottery as was taught to me by Clarence Cruz of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. It was a few years back that he taught me and so I have forgotten some important information.
I notice in your videos, you use this compression pinch. Using white micaceous clay, when I try to do the compression pinch, the clay wrinkles in on itself, forming great fissures and cracks.
Second, I was taught to apply the coil to the lip of the pot, kind of hanging half on and half off, whether on the inside or the outside. I notice you apply yours to the top of the lip. Any comments on this?
Lastly, I am having trouble "collaring in" a pot, which relates to the compression pinch. I'm working on a vase, which continues to crack as I try to collar in the neck.
Maybe you have some advice for me. In any case, I really appreciate your art as shown in your videos!
