When you think of December, you normally wouldn’t expect to hear about tornadoes. However in 2021, December tornadoes were anything but scarce. This was an EF4 tornado that happened on December 10th 2021 near Caruthersville Missouri, and this is the same storm a few hours later, a different tornado decimating the entire town of Mayfield Kentucky, which eventually went on to break records. In this video, we’re going to look at the events that caused this to happen, and dive deeper into one of the most historic December tornado outbreaks, and one of the most historic tornadoes, in history.

"...it would completely obliterate an entire candle factory which, unfortunately, still had many workers inside of it." For some reason, the most poignant part of this event is often left out of the story. Many of the candle factory workers were very well aware of the danger they were in and, aside from texting their fears to family and loved ones, were begging upper management for permission to leave... only to be told that nobody was allowed to leave and that anybody who did leave would be fired immediately. (Ironically, after the dust settled, it was quickly realized that none of those from upper management were among the deceased victims...) Welcome to Corporate America, I suppose. Profit over protection. Such a senseless and unnecessary tragedy.

I was on my couch monitoring this storm for hours on my couch just watching how close this monster could have came to my city of Bowling Green. I went to bed after tracking it for many hours, went to sleep for like 5 minutes and got woke up by my NOAA radio stating a huge tornado was in the area. A few hours prior, I saw a strong cell at the Tennessee Kentucky border headed in the way of my city and warned my friends hours ahead. The tornado was really close to my home, missed it by 8 whopping minutes. That night changed so many lives, and it was sad that this happened in such a time when tornadoes aren't supposed to be very active, and killed so many right before Christmas. God bless all of those impacted.

I love the intro to this, especially with the DVD menu effects that you added. I hope you keep making more documentaries like this because this is amazing!

I'll never forget the days before, the constant forecast, the eerie temperatures, and all the talk about what was yet to come. Very well produced video, good watch.

I’m a survivor, I was at the candle factory 2 hours before it collapsed. It was so scary because it sounded like something unearthly

The explanation of why it wasn't an ef5 was that the structures destroyed weren't well anchored. Reed Timmer did state on his summary of this storm that he thought it probably was of ef5 intensity. I'm not an expert by any means, but the damage I saw was terrible even a few months after.

I used to live in the plains of Dallas, and tornadoes were no joke there, they can be very unpredictable, great video, and glad to see you're still active!

Absolutely amazing video. Still seeing this monster on radar to this day it’s still truly mind blowing. How this wasn’t rated EF 5 I have no clue but it was a true beast!

This day stressed me out for a completely different reason. I live in Texas and my brother lives in Missouri. I was checking the SPC site throughout the week telling my brother "Watch the weather this week." And he was like On the day of the outbreak I checked the SPC site again and saw that it was updated to a moderate risk with Missouri within the targeted areas, my heart dropped. I called him and sent a screenshot of the SPC and told him "Please, watch the weather today!" Later that evening I was watching the radar and I was paying close attention to his side of town and sure enough he received a tornado warning but thankfully it was just a brief spin up and it just rained heavily afterwards. Although I was relieved that my brother was okay in his storm, I was horrified by what I was seeing on radar just to the east. Just tornado warning after tornado warning I have never seen anything like this before in real time only to find out the following morning on CNN what happened in Mayfield. The whole time I was thinking could've been my brother..." My heart and prayers truly goes out to everyone who was effected by these storms.

This tornado absolutely wrecked Kentucky. I live 35 minutes from Bremon, and it was a devastating night to say the least. I lost friends that night. I'm thankful to be alive, and i mourn for those who lost their lives that night.

I'm still baffled how the NWS rated this an EF4.

What other videos would you guys like to see on this channel? For now preferably tornadoes/tornado outbreaks but I will eventually branch out and away from them. Anything disaster related works.

This gave me same the feeling as I got when I had watched it on radar when it recycled and produced the Mayfield EF4, the stomach dropping and chills sensation. This is a truly an amazing video and you did a great job on it, synopsis and everything. You’re a seriously underrated YouTuber.

Concise and to the point with tons of pictures and no glossing over smaller towns impacted - wonderful video summary!

Baffled that it did not get an EF5 rating but at the same time not the takeaway from this. This thing was a beast, IMO it rivals some of the tornadoes from the 2011 outbreak in terms of consistency.

EDIT: For your next project you should focus on more "freak" outbreaks like Nashville/Cookeville 2020 or if not try Vilonia, Washington, OR maybe some forgotten tornadoes like Lawrenceburg, TN 1998, or that random Yellowstone EF4. Good video altogether.
EDIT 2: missed a word in the sentence.

I survived this one, i'm one of the 110 workers that were at the candle factory by the time the tornado hit .More than 3 hours under the rubble waiting for the worst .9 of my coworkers die, 8 right there and one at the hospital, this was the Quad State Tornado Outbreak and will never be forgotten !

This is when a Tornado is just downright evil. It’s bad enough that it came in December, but it was also at night when they’re at their most dangerous. And worse yet, the storm system lasted for an unusually long time. That’s just as frightening as it is surreal, making us wonder how Mother Nature can be so cruel.
