Ant lions sound like mini Sarlac Pits.
I’m terrified of snakes. You are quite brave seeking them.

I love that you highlighted a video where you search and cannot find...such a typical day for most folks. Thank you!

I rock climb out there a lot in the summer, castlewood has 2 entrances, 1 to the busy side that you were on and 1 to the side that is a lot quieter and has all the climbing spots. I've seen a ton of rattlers and gardners on the climbing side, don't think I've seen a single one on the busy side. Try that end next time you are out that way!

I was just there on Tuesday. I'm from Texas and was hoping to see a rattle snake. I passed a group that said they saw a big one under a boulder but I looked all along the trail and never saw it. It was a great hike and the dam area was very interesting.

Thanks for taking us along, too bad you didn't get to find one. Maybe next time. We have rattlesnakes here in Michigan, I personally haven't come across one in the wild. Best one I've seen was a 3'+ Blue Racer.

In my line of work I come across with all different kind of snakes and poison oak or ivy. Last week or so I killed a 7 tail rattle shaker rattler snake. Two months ago I had poison oak on my arm and it sucked big time. So, cool video. But I wouldn't even try to catch a snake. Here we call it a dead snake is a good snake. Lol 👍🏻

Slopes with southern exposure will be your best bet

I know this is an older video and not sure if you are still looking for snakes. A friend of mine has some videos of a couple of encounters with rattle snakes that he had near E470 and Hampden (Plains Conservation Center area) While not as beautiful as Castlewood Canyon you may try your luck out there if you are still looking for snakes. I love your channel by the way. It encourages me to get out and explore this great state we live in!

I used to see a lot of Rattle snakes around Kerrville Texas and in south Texas in the Spring time. They would come out of hibernation and sun themselves on the rocks.

That's a beautiful area. Thanks for the poison Ivy info on crushing vs touching!

They are probably basking on top of a big slab of rock

I grew up looking for rattlesnakes in that canyon. Wow this really took me back. Still to this day my favorite go to spot for buzz tails. And I live in AZ now. Very cool to see some very familiar sights from childhood again. Thanks

I'm not sure how notifications work after 10 months, so will re-post on more recent vid. First... another good day out. Life has fed me quite a bounty of adventure and blessings. Reptiles are one of my most studied creatures.
A Great tip for, well .. Any sort of day hunt, that includes nooks and crannies - the brightest light known to man, the Sun. And a small mirror focused into these spaces, lights them up as day. Take care in transport of a mirror when hiking steep and rough terrain.
Thanks again for taking folks along

Went back out there on Labor Day looking for rattlesnakes too and came up short. I looked at my picture when I saw them last and it was in October so I think I might revisit there during that time.

Hi. Thanks for the tour. We have Antlions in 'Straya too. A snake we have here is called a Deathadder is a little bit similar to your Rattlesnake. It doesn't have a rattle, but it's tail tip is thin and whispy which it uses by hiding under leaf litter and sticks it's tail tip up and shakes it about to attract small critters. Cheers, Jason.

This is one of my favorite state parks. I go there often. The last time we were there this past summer we saw a rattlesnake right on the main sidewalk! just sitting there gathering sun. We took some pictures and took a wide birth around it and warned some other passer buys that a rattler was right on the sidewalk. This was the first time we ever saw a rattler in the park and now we are more careful when we go. The state park website also lists this park as one where you can pan for gold. Not sure you can keep it but you can pan for fun.
