When I first wrote this song way back in 2012 it was for a cross promotional collaboration with Bioware for the Mass Effect 3 launch. My first draft was a more personal feeling song, without any direct references to Reapers, Shepard etc... closer to how I write nowadays. The Bioware team at the time asked me to add more overt references/names so I did. This remake however is much closer in spirit to my original vision for the song and I love it. This brought me to tears, not going to lie. Mass Effect as a series is one of the few game series in my catalog that I keep coming back to, even after over a decade of playing it. Shepard's story, their plight, is so well realized and investing as far as character story arcs go that I feel it's nearly unrivaled in the video game world. Having this already great song given new life, just as the series has been, is significant to me. The song captures a lot of the emotion from the entire series, and does it so well, that I felt it was hard to top on its own until I heard this. Absolutely legendary, Shepard would be proud and I, as a listener and fan of your work, applaud you Gavin.
