Navy 1969 to 73 Shipfitter. Deck was an open air prison for many of the hands. Back in those days depending on the ship you had to be hard to stand up to many of the jobs. Long hours bad food dangerous seas. Some of the D.D. Destroyers was a really hard, food didn’t last long and the ship had seen better days. My first ship was a tender, I work on many DD . Welding and replacing just about any thin on the old ships. The worst ship I was sent out to repair was an oiler. The crew was crazy hadn’t been in port for months. Officer’s country was protected with arm guards. Many bad conditions aboard many old ships you wouldn’t want to be on. I didn’t stand watch because being a welder was like a full time job. One job, we never slept for three days. Coffee and cigs and food lower down to us. Being a plumber(Shipfitter) on a ship you see it all and see the condition of the people and the ships.

I'm a middle-aged lifelong civilian. My best friend retired as an E8 Bosun's mate. I've met and worked with many sailors/former sailors. All I know is of that Bosun's Mate's seemed to enjoy their mos more than any others. The biggest @ssholes we're culinary chefs for some reason.

It would be an ok rate, if you didn't have boot licker's for supervisors. But your supervisor's will have never been in deck. And everyone who breaks the rules is sent to deck. So it's treated like a penalty, you work 15 hours a day you stand a 4 or 5 hour watch, not much sleep as a boatsun, " if any sleep " any extra operation that comes up guess who gets the work. But not the credit. Boatswain mate is over looked for promotion. Even when he did all the work.
