I ultimately had to get new friends because of this (and one other reason) I loved them, they weren't toxic at all, the reason was completely valid (my friends had been abusing them and I didn't know it). I'm so glad I listened to them :')

Depends on the partner and the friend. I've broken contact with a friend because of my then SO and the friend fighting over something ridiculous and me getting stuck i the middle. The SO ended up showing their true colors, being toxic and controlling and our relationship ended when he didn't like something I said or did and I finally gave up on trying to mend it because I was naive and dumb, and I just accapted that it was over and was in the end happy about it. About a month later my then ex friend contacted me and we became bestie again and we've been bff's ever since and I'll never let someone destroy my friendships again. I trust the few friends I have more than I trust anyone else.
