As Los Angeles faces its most destructive wildfires in history, tens of thousands of buildings have been destroyed, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes.

The largest blaze, in the Pacific Palisades area, has burned more than 23,000 acres, making it the city’s worst fire on record.

To grasp the scale, the affected area stretches across large parts of lower Manhattan and Queens in New York.

In this BBC News special, we hear from those on the front line and the people who have lost their homes and livelihoods to the disaster.

That 91 year old man said, I will start all over again. This man inspired me so much. I am only 55 and realizing how much I still have to go. Thanks for reporting. God bless these victims

A shoutout to the bravery of these reporters and camera crews covering this disaster.. To all the fire crews risking their lives to fight the flames, law enforcement helping keep everyone safe, and the people of LA who reach out to help others even as they lose everything... It is heartbreaking. Prayers to you all...

Texas citizen here-this reporting was phenomenonal. I really appreciated the humanity behind it which is why I specifically came to this page. Much of the reporting in the US is politically-motivated & pointing fingers instead of remembering that there are so many people, animals & nature that are suffering.
But reading all of these kind and supportive comments from all over the world is what really got me crying. That and the American flag blowing in the wind amidst the fires, ashes & ruins.
So much ❤️ to all of the wonderful people in the comments. You are appreciated. ❤️🇺🇲

You keep saying “Nobody could have predicted this.”

But there have been DECADES of warnings.

This is just tragic. My family that lives in LA barely escaped the flames. My aunt’s house is still standing but all her neighbors homes burned down. Only three houses on that street were spared and her’s was one of them. Extremely lucky.

"I'm tough, I'm tough... even though I'm 91 years old, I'm tough, I'll start over again" - this really, really hit me hard. 😞

My family and I lost our home and friends in the Lahaina fires 2 years ago. My prayers and aloha go out to those directly and indirectly affected by this disaster. I hope this large disaster will open people's eyes and sway leadership. However, it shouldn't take a disaster of this scale to provoke action and shift priorities, action is needed beforehand to prevent these kinds of things from happening repeatedly.

I'm 62 yrs. old and a SoCal native. It has been very well known to the politicians and authorities that this was going to happen. There have been warnings going back decades. It was only a matter of time, proper weather conditions, and a spark. It's going to take 2 to 3 years just to clear out all the debris. 10 to 15 years to rebuild.

This fire is a reminder that there's nothing that is certain, nothing that you can take for granted in life.
