I've reviewed about a dozen Greek Grammars now and each one has its strengths and weaknesses. But this one surprised me in two ways. To find out if this grammar would be good to add to your library, watch the video.

Croy was my first Koine textbook! I like it a lot.

Great review. I had the opportunity to walk through this grammar for 3 semesters. I haven’t been through any other grammars, but I enjoyed Croy’s grammar. In regard to your comment on vocabulary, you’ll notice an additional vocabulary list at the end of each chapter of 20-40+ words specifically for the NT and LXX exercises. My professor focused on Croys exercises which pushed us to work harder due to a lack of an answer key. I sure did wish there was an answer key at the time. Thank you for your videos, they help and encourage me.

Your critiques are very apt and you should see my old, battered, dog eared, highlighted, underlined and generally mauled Croy text! It was my first alternative to my classroom textbook back when I was first learning Greek. One of the strengths you didn’t mention was in the area of adjectives. I recall that Croy did an excellent job of demonstrating the use of articles with attributives which stuck with me and helped enormously when it came time to study participles. Since then I have added many and newer grammars but I will always have a certain fondness for the Green Croy. When I saw it pictured in your video I knew I had to comment. Blessings, MikeinMinnesota

This was my first grammar. I still pull it off the shelf first for reference, perhaps because I know it so well. It is well written. The exercises were great. I would go back to previous lessons and rework selected exercises to make sure I had it down. My professor also working through selected exercises helped greatly. After working other grammars, I did see that the vocabulary was light.
I wasn't quite sure about your comments about charts. Perhaps it's your electronic copy, there was an included CD with the book. It only was a pdf, but it included an answer key along with additional exercises, quizzes, and charts.
Quite right that there are weak parts; quite right that there is a lot that is helpful in Croy.

I used this grammar while learning beginning greek while in college. I think it is a great grammar, but it should be noted that the construction of the book isn't of the best quality. Depending on the edition, either the binding falls apart after a while, or the design on the cover starts peeling off. (But it is a great value for the amount you pay for it)

I used this grammar and I think is easier to understand than Mounce, which I used for 2 years. Croy's is my favorite now.

I used Croy for many years, and found it to be a sort of 'just right' for a two semester introduction to Greek. As you note, I did have to include commentary on a few things like deponency. I would say a strength is the attention to verb formation. I.e., you learn the parts (codes, endings) in order to reduce the amount of paradigm memorization. Croy did actually provide an answer key at some point, so it is available somewhere. Thanks for your review!

Thank you for a very thoughtful and thorough review. Beyond what has already been said:

1. The online resources provide further exercises, more detailed grammar and syntax, and an answer key. The consistency of each online chapter, however, is lacking. With these supplements, Croy is not so short a grammar.

2. Coverage of the third declension is inadequate. You cannot present the nouns for mother, father, and daughter, for example, without explaining the morphology.

3. The biblical exercises are way too difficult for the level of each chapter, with abundant vocab glosses. I would recommend not even starting them until the student has finished the chapters on participles. They will be much more enjoyable at that point.

Amazing how many grammars are actually available.

Is it possible or rather a good option to make an attempt learning greek myself at home after having bought all resources required? I mean, isn't everything we need to know about koine greek written in litterature?

I wish grammars included MORE exercises from outside the NT, whether made up or not. As someone who has memorised large parts of the NT at one time or another I can often recall those practice sentences which come from the NT based on vocabulary alone.

Your reviews are always so delightful and helpful. Just curious, are there any grammars you would absolutely never use again in your classrooms, perhaps for being too stilted or awkward besides dated content? Blessings!

I actually purchased this book many years ago, while I was trying to learn the language on my own. , I did find it difficult to use it for self-study. If there are answer keys somewhere I do not know. I ended up using it as a supplement to Mounce BBG. as I found his explanation/approach was quite different.

How do modern grammars stack up against a classic like AT Robertson?
