80s rock stars then and now Tears for Fears transition edit. *THEN* - Tears for Fears released their number one 80s music hit single “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” in 1985 when co-founders and co-lead vocalists Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were both only 23 years old. *NOW* - both Orzabal and Smith are 62 years old in 2023. *THEN* “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” was from their second album “Songs from the Big Chair." *NOW* – Tears for Fears released their seventh album “The Tipping Point” in 2022. *THEN* - Teen angst inspired the name Tears for Fears which came from psychologist Arthur Janov's work on primal scream therapy. *NOW* - "The Tipping Point" is the work of middle-aged survivors influenced by therapy and loss, including the loss of Orzabal's wife of 35 years in 2017. *THEN* - Orzabal and Smith were born 2 months apart in England in 1961. *NOW* – they have remained friends since their early teens.
