Understanding chord substitutions can be a great way to add some variety to your chord progressions even if all you know are your standard campfire chord shapes.

I always enjoy explaining what was shown to me as the “2 out of 3 rule” (thanks @philsilverberg) to new students when working on understanding chord substitutions. Long story short, the F major chord and the D minor chord shown here share two of the same notes. That’s what makes them relative to each other. What’s really cool is you can apply this concept (the 2 out of 3 rule) to other chords in the same key.
