"A Discussion On Physical Modeling Synthesis"

Abstract:
"In this talk we will discuss some of the history of digital sound synthesis, and in particular physical modelling as an approach to synthetic sound. We will get the views of researchers that have been working on the latest modeling techniques, as well as detailing some of challenges in creating real-time audio systems using this work."

It's great to see some cross-talk from one domain to another. I suppose that the interests electronic composers and trendy side of the music business seems out of band, but it can be an interesting place to visit.
I would be interested in knowing how realistic or any informed speculation on the usefulness of mixing physical modeling as an effect process that would work with audio, live or recorded. I can imaging adding certain qualities to my synth or guitar that belong to much more rare cellos, violins or pianos.

Really interesting stuff. I assume this is a domain that is probably hard to dabble with recreationally? I'd love to try out physical modeling but it seems like the prerequisite knowledge is probably about three textbooks away.

Also those demo sounds at 33:55 are fantastic. Want.

I'm really interested in the idea of using physical modeling DSP methods as tools to make non-physical sounds, like sounds more in the synth realm than the actual physical modeling realm. I'm so bored of the same old subtractive style synths that keep coming out, not many of them are trying to push the envelope. But there's a lot to explore in methods like these, and while I'm not really interested in emulating real world sounds, I think it'd be really cool to package a physical modeling algorithm in a synth aimed at making synthetic sounds you would only expect from a synthesizer.
