Need a computer for college? Doing a tech major that includes programming such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity? You'll need a strong computer with solid memory capabilities. I recommend a M4 Pro Mac Mini at 48 or 64GB of Ram or if you need something cheaper to last a few years, a 15" Macbook Air 24GB Ram.

Use Apple's Education store for discounts. Anyone can use the Apple Education store, whether a student or not. You can also search for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals on the Mac Mini, Macbook Air, and Macbook Pro.

Thanks for the tip about the educational store. I ordered a 48GB 14-core model.

Don't most students today want a laptop? And don't some colleges mandate Windows computers, at least in Engineering departments? The loaded Mini costs over $2K even on the EDU store.

Great choice! However, if you're not into the Apple ecosystem, I’d recommend considering a Dell Precision or Lenovo ThinkPad. I’d also suggest looking for refurbished models to save some money.

Do all system and app files need to be stored on internal memory? Can you download the OS to an external drive? Can an external drive be configured to serve as boot drive?

Tech and programming, start with a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4. The AMD CPU allows some light 1080p gaming. Only if the college program uses software that runs natively on MacOS would I use a MacBook. Get a refurbished M2 Pro. Never pay full cost while in college.

For non-tech majors, get either an M3 Air 13/15 or Dell XPS 13 Lunar Lake. Honorable mention: Dell Latitude 7455 for business/economic majors. All 3 are great for battery life.

M4 Pro Mac Mini w/ 64GB RAM is a wonderful machine especially for Computer Science Major. 64GB works well for LLM, but actually 96GB is better.
