80/20: T-Nuts Overview

Hello, and welcome to 80/20's product highlight series. Today we're going to take a look at a vast selection of T-nuts that 80/20 offers. 80/20's T-nuts come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes to suit your project's needs. They're available in fractional, metric, and compatible across a wide range of profile series.

Now the first style of T-nut we're going to talk about is the standard economy slide-in T-nut. This is one of the more popular options that 80/20 offers and comes standard in most recommended bolt assemblies. Now as the name suggests, it simply slides in from the side of the profile. Now however, you want to make sure that the pilot projection is facing downwards, or towards the middle of the profile. Now, the great thing about this T-nut is that you can substitute out a single T-nut sometimes for a double and a triple T-nut to save you time on your build.

Now, let's say that, that doesn't work and you are farther along in your project, or it's completely finished and you want to add something on later, and you can't access the end of your profile. That's where our next two options come into play. The first one, is the drop in T-nut; simply drop it in anywhere in the open T-slot, and lock it into place, like so. Now one other option we have is a roll in T-nut. It serves the same purpose, but just like it sounds, it rolls into the open T-slot.

Now when we are using this, we have a few different options. We have T-nuts with a set screw, a flex handle, a ball spring, or a spring leaf. Now although all these look different, they all serve the same purpose, and that is to hold themselves into place, despite the orientation of the bar. Now one last T-nut we're going to talk about is the self-aligning T-nut. This one helps fills any open space in the T-slot, and helps you line up your bolts a lot easier during install.

That was actually really useful. Didnt even consider those spring t-nuts. Been banging my head against the wall trying to use those hammer head t-nuts.

I like and prefer having as the default t-slot configuration (the tab) one that spreads the load over a greater surface area. The would result in larger oval tabs. T-nuts for T-slots are fairly expensive when you consider the amount and size of nuts needed. There exist T-tabs which can be purchased on Ebay which you can then fit with your favorite threaded shank. I will use all-thread then fit it with the T-tab and on the otherside, a brass insert on a knob. I do not like T-tabs which have traction grids, they dig into the aluminum which I do not like. Thumbs up.

Are the various t-nuts rated for different load holding capacities? If so, is there a list that specs this somewhere?

I would really like to build a floor to ceiling tv stand with this system, 2 vertical legs which should have 2 or 4 crossbars (only 2 in the middle, or 2 in the middle and 1 at the bottom and at the top) and 4 regulatig feet bases. The room height is about 255 cm, how much will it cost me.

Whats the purpose of thr pilot extruded end and why does it have to be facing down towards 2020 when installed? Does it really matter? And if so why?

is it possible to design something like a computer "desk" using just dimensional specifications, even if one does not have a design software program to actually build digitally with? it would be nice if there was a standard kit set of t-nuts, and the profile series, that you could build directly from and modify as you went... i would like to build something almost minimalist and open but something capable of holding up and stable. so, something that can use a t-slot compatible VESA screen holder (or, some brake system for securing a screen base that isnt using VESA connections. if it could incorporate a couple sets of drawers, and space for data storage machines, the computer, and the screen (or three, or more even) then that would be great... of course, i would want to get a better idea of things talking directly to some one on Facebook, but in any case, i would want to build something that was ultra stable, and could carry or hold a Lot of weight (better safe than sorry right) and, something that would fit my somewhat limited space. because im not sure exactly how to know what profile goes best with what t-nut, or how to accomplish connecting it all together for the most stable, and weight capable frame, i am looking for direct suggestions, based on things that have already been done.

Im thinking its to create more thread engagement without having to use thicker material...

why don't you offer any m3 t nuts.... better yet center punched and undrilled t nuts so customers can drill and tap their own custom threads
