Three weeks into my 2 months stay in the Philippines last year I developed a severe infection on my right eardrum being constantly in the water snorkeling just about every single day. Within an hour after reaching Cebu City, I was able to see an ear specialist at Chong Hua Hospital after a quick phone call with the receptionist. I was in and out of the doctor's office in 45 minutes, was billed 500 pesos consultation fee and paid 1, 500 pesos for the prescription drug at Mercury Drug Store. It was a very easy and pleasant experience and the visit to the hospital allows me to continue on with my journey to 4 more islands and enjoy my tropical vacation.

I am still a few years away from needing a procedure for my heart but I always keep up on good places to go. Recently I have connected with a hospital in Tunisia that has gained some international attention for their heart repair procedures. With medical costs rising in the Philippines I keep my options open.

I would NEVER have major surgery in Philippines. I have been enough hospitals here in Philippines to see the unsanitary conditions and general lack of expertise of Medical Professionals. Thailand and Mexico is a totally different story. I feel that you can get as good or better results in Thailand or Mexico, But NEVER THE PHILIPPINES.

Have you ever had any experience with the insurance companies that cater to foreigners in the Philippines? I have heard of a company called Pacific Cross from others. I am 46 and plan to migrate there this year, but I would like to have a health option plan for safety there.

Very interesting. Hard to figure why medicare doesn't cover treatment outside the U.S. Am curious to know why you were considering this option for your gall bladder surgery since you had medical insurance at the time. Am assuming that your out of pocket costs for that were not significant.
