I’ve always been afraid to use line higher than what’s recommended on the reel But I recently started using bait casters after fishing all of my life with spinning reels and now realize there is a big difference in performance and capability’s

Great insight into line size choices for bass fishing techniques

I fish creeks and ponds in a kayak. All I carry are spinning rods. I never understood people saying bait casters were more accurate. I can put a bait wherever I want. Anyway, I throw a lot of smaller baits. A big bass for the creeks is maybe 5 lbs. and in ponds, I have caught my largest, 10.5lbs. I pretty much always use fluorocarbon line, from 4 to 12 lb lines. (I do like catching pan fish so that gear is very light and very small baits, but the panfish taste great). A friend converted my catfishing line to braid. That is where it shines for me. Usually, 20lb.

I just like spinning reels. Personal choice.

Great information John. Great for beginners and the more advanced. I still like my 10 lb for cranking. But got me to thinking. Thank you my brother.

Thanks for the info! I like to fish lighter lines. I'm usually using a 6 to 8 pound for finesse applications, and 10 to 15 for throwing lures.. Unless I'm throwing big swim Baits, then I bump it up because I don't want to lose those expensive Spro BB z's.

This is just the video i was looking for. New to bass fishing and was completely overwhelmed on information about type and size of line to use. Thanks for the insight. Im going to follow your suggestion of the 30# braid and 12-15 flouro. Have you ever had and good luck with lure clips instead of retying a new bait everytime? When i salt water fished alot we used Tony clips and they seemed to work good.

Question for you: I just picked up an Abu Garcia DLC 50 baitcaster and an Ugly Stik Med/Heavy 15-25lbs. I primarily do saltwater fishing, but want something I can use occasionally in freshwater. What type of line AND how many lbs. test would you recommend for this set-up? Thanks! In the ocean, I'm typically catching rockfish, CA Halibut and an occasional barracuda.

12 to 14 lb flouro for me has snapped off soo many times on the hookset with a Palomar knot the last couple years. Crawling craws with a bullet weight, shakyhead, worms, dropshot. I use the fg knot with braid to flouro. Im thinking no lighter than 17lb now

So unless i'm finesse fishing in clear water i shouldn't worry about a leader when fishing braid?

What size and type of line should I use for throwing a 5 inch Trace?
And can you throw it on a spinning rod or only a bait caster? I do use both, but prefer the spinning, as I just started with a bait caster about a year ago. Thank you for any advice you may give!

More power to you John, especially to your contents. What brand should I buy for a braided line that can haul a 20 lbs fish? Thanks.

So what type and size line would you use for a fluke on a weighted swimbait hook or a weightless caffeine shad- fished like a soft jerkbait is traditionally. I'm throwing it on 30lb braid to a 10-12 lb fluoro leader but I'm having a tendency to over work the bait I think- especially on shorter casts. Should I change to straight fluroro maybe or just learn not to over work it? Both? Have the same problem with hard jerkbait- braid to leader again- 10 pound fluoro usually- but I over work them to often- and haven't really gotten good at maintaining the proper amount of slack. I'm trying to get a more crisp action, stopping and starting on a dime- but it's very difficult not to hit it too hard or to leave the proper amount of slack in the line as I work it. I've considered changing to a spinning rod to- just to see if that would help- I know a lot of guys swear by them for jerkbaits.

Thanks John, great job describing the various applications of the line to the baits. Do you ever match the line to the rod action you are using? I.e. a med heavy rod use 30# braid and a heavy action rod use 50# braid? Thanks again!
