I've been working with Linux for 20 years. Today I heard some young kid refer to soo-suh. I laughed at his ignorance. Then I saw this, and realized I'd been saying it wrong for decades.

Susa? I call this name Suse with an E at the ending like the first E in example. Because the company was founded in Germany and the name was an abbreviaton for "Software und System-Entwicklung" (software and system development).
But thank you for the funny video. :)

The German full name was: Gesellschaft für Software und Systementwicklung mbh. Short SuSE. So the connect spelling is suu se. Es ist ein deutscher Name also ist folglich die Abkürzung auch Deutsch. 👋😉 Grüße aus Deutschland

This guy gives Jack Black a run for his money and I can tell that's where the inspiration comes from.

Some words are funny creatures
not spelled like how they sound
Like bologna, colonel, Wednesday
Sometimes they can confound
The next word can be tricky
Most people get it wrong
But I’ll teach you how to say it
By the end of this song...
It’s SUSE
Say SUSE
Don’t let the name confuse ya.
It starts with SU
And ends with SE
Now doesn’t that amuse ya?
It’s SUSE
Say SUSE
The spelling might elude ya..
It’s S and U then S and E
Now open up your eyes and
Now SUSE is a company
A worldwide one to boot
With solutions for your software needs
Now isn’t that a hoot?
We realize that it’s tricky...
but ask you don’t misuse
Most people mispronounce it
They try to call it SOOS
But it’s SUSE
Yeah SUSE
Now say it with me...
SUSE
It starts like SUE
That girl you know
Who took your heart tore it in two
And then she left you feeling blue
You’re all alone no one loves you
I digress
It’s SUSE
Say SUSE
I have an appaloosa
I know that isn’t pertinent
But not much rhymes with SUSE
Oh it’s SUSE
Say SUSE
My lovely little SUSE
I’m going green
Know what I mean?
I hope by now that you have seen...
It’s not as tricky as it seems
We just prefer you say...
SUSE

This was well worth it! Absolutely effective. I know I'll never forget how to pronounce it, now!

It's pronounced exactly as it would in German, which is completely unsurprising considering the location of the company. German doesn't do silent letters.

The crazy part is, he is actually pronouncing it wrong (not kidding). I'm a German native speaker and SUSE is a German company, trust me, no one says "SUSA". Same with the car Porsche. Americans think we pronounce it Porscha, which we don't. Look at German YouTube channels talking about SUSE, then you'll hear it correctly. It's simply SU-SEH. I think the issue is that English speakers have a problem pronouncing the phonetic "e" (eh). They keep hearing the sound of an "ah" especially in reference to German words. Same in reverse with German speakers who can't hear the slight lisp in the English "th", such as "three" or "they". German speakers often hear "th" as "s", so they say "sree" (three) and "sey" (they).

So how and when did the original German pronunciation soos-eh (ending in E as in echo) for "Software und System-Entwicklung" turn into susa?

I think the company doesn't know how to pronounce their own name 😂 love you guys

XD If you google "SUSE pronounciation" it says "Soos"....
Nah really now who says it's pronounced "Susa"?
SUSA is an abbreviation for "Software und System Entwicklung" (=software and system development) and the index letter for which SUSA stands for are pronounced slightly differently in German

If you're going to try and correct peoples' pronunciations of something, this is how it should be done!
