When you delete from your library, iTunes can also delete songs from your hard drive, ONLY if the song file is located in your "iTunes Music Folder Location". To check where this location is, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab.

The folder listed there is the folder that iTunes can manage.

When you select the delete song option, another dialogue box should appear that gives you the option to delete the song from the hardrive...

I did EXACTLY what you said, but every time I plug in my iPhone into iTunes, it syncs all of my "new songs" into the iTunes library, which includes the song I JUST "completely" deleted, and I have no idea where the song came from if I'd already deleted it.

If I permanently delete songs from an iTunes account on my computer, as you instruct above, will these same songs be deleted from other iTunes accounts on the same computer? Thanks.

This should work with iTunes 11 the same way. I just tried it. Also, I will try and make an updated version of this video.

You will not get the second delete question about keeping or trashing the file if your music file is not in the Itunes music folder.... If the music file is in a folder on your desktop you will have to delete the song on itunes and the file in the desktop folder seperatly. I ran into that problem and wanted to freakin shoot Itunes. Hope that helps someone out there. Open your files on your computer and go to your music folder, Open itunes, open iTunes Media, The file there called music is where all of your music you want on iTunes needs to go

i can't find the music on my iTunes, but every time isync to my iPhone, the songs pops up. where can i find it to get rid of them-  one has a cloud next to it, the other doesn't

you have to go to the top left. click iTunes and then preferences and then advanced and click reset warning signs

You did that but how do u get the song that u delted off your device? ( i have a ipod mini shuffle )

I've done as you said, but the song is still listed and there is a blue cloud with a downward arrow in between the song's name column and the artist column. Is the any way to remove it from the list altogether?

Hi I've just downloaded the new I-tunes version 11 and in the main music folder I can no longer delete songs? I regularly add tracks ripped from YouTube prior to their release and then upgrade to the proper download version later. I don't want to keep everything I add to I-tunes! Any suggestions? Or are Apple determined to piss off as many of their customers as possible?

Hi, I'm on a pc and when I right click on the song it does not give me the option to delete.    How to delete?   Do I have to delete the WHOLE PLAYLIST?  Thanks

I probably know less about iTunes or computers than anyone reading this, BUT I figured it out! I too was experiencing the same problem with iTunes not letting me delete unwanted movies, songs or their icons. I spent many hours determined to resolve. If all else fails, try this to remove unwanted crap from iTunes:

Go to:

My Computer
C: Drive
Users
(The folder with your name on it, in my case) Rob
Music
iTunes
iTunes Media
iTunes Preferences.plist

OR

an easier way, go to your command bar by right clicking the windows icon/logo (or the start button if it's an older computer) on the bottom left of your screen.
Then click on "Run".
Next type in iTunes Preferences.plist
and that should take you to the list where you can delete the stuff the idioTunes wouldn't allow.

How did you resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem, and its a hassle going to my music folder to delete things after deleting on itunes.
