Keep It Simple

The new PlayStation you swore you couldn’t live without. The heap of clothes in your wardrobe that you said you might have a need to wear again someday. We hoard so much stuff and convince ourselves that we need it all. But when our eyes glow red and the fire truck blares its sirens in the distance, none of that seems to matter. Why then do we cling on to these things so much?

As a minimalist, I feel like less stuff gives me more time for myself. The less I have to worry about my possessions, the more I can care about my personality and passion. I am happy that this topic gets more attention right now, but I don't like that it is being used as a marketing strategy by people just to get more money or that people see it as a trend. A style of clothing that will get changed after two years. It doesnt reflect the core values of Minimalism.

Can't remember if it was Miyamoto Musashi who said it, but Lao Tzu have said something similar:
"'Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.'

I love that quote. And thank you for this video,

I began my minimalism journey last year. I've bought nothing and sold or donated a lot of my possessions. It got to the point where I've almost regretted certain sentimental things I've sold, only to not regret it months later as I realized I wasn't using it or caring about it anyway. It's a tough change, it's definitely a process and requires time and patience. Minimalism is not changing what you have into these clean looking products, it's getting rid of everything you don't need. I'm glad the video points that out, albeit, only at the very end. The issue is in the mind, it is convincing yourself you don't need this and that. Everyone comes up with a reason to keep something.

Your version of Minimalism is an accurate one to me. Thanks for sharing it with us all.

When watching your video, I am reminded of the quote accredited to Will Rogers that goes: "We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like."

This is my version of that quote: "We spend our lives buying things we cannot afford to impress people we don't know, for people who don't even care."

Great video. With minimum wage, I have no choice but to be minimalist 🤣

For me minimalism is not about having less things, but its about self consciousness, about what we need and use more logical decision when buying things. Not just driven by emotional state let alone decision that comes from others perspective

I love this. I’m 26 & been living this way for years. I’m always giving stuff away because I’m not attached to anything materialistic. You can’t take anything with you when we leave from this earth, except for the memories and experiences. ❤

Minimalism= less is more
Minimalism in reality= throw out old, buy new cool looking Minimalistic stuff, neutral colors everywhere!

Im a minimalist, i reuse old things that are useful, i threw out things that weren't, i dont spend money on new things unless it a necessity. I use my freedom to do the things I love. My suggestion is to live like you're homeless even though you arent! You essentially carry what you need even if those things are sitting in your home. Buy things that are robust and last for a long time, and spend your free time(and extra money) with family, friends and nature. You will thank yourself I promise!

My mom introduced me minimalism. It's the least she could do.

the pursit of less is actually called (قناعت) or contentment in english in islam.. Contentment is an emotional state of satisfaction that can be seen as a mental state drawn from being at ease in one's situation, body and mind. Colloquially speaking, contentment could be a state of having accepted one's situation and is a milder and more tentative form of happiness

Isn't this somehow tied into the surging popularity of van life living? I would think it is. And at 42 years old I am still envious of it. I understand it's not practical having kids and trying to raise a family but at the same time I see it as my true happiness.

I think Maximalism was one of the BEST marketing ploys to get people to keep buying things. Not only that but MORE things. Maximalism houses are borderline hoarder levels of stuff. Companies seen a trend that wouldn't benefit them and went "hey look at this instead it's not boring and drap and doesn't make you feel like you are living in poverty". It seems to have worked.

I was introduced to minimalism and anti-consumerism from a book called The Gospel according to Larry back in middle school. Although I am not a minimalist, think it really helped me view material goods more as a tool and less as wants growing up. My partner is 100% a minimalist, every purchase is a commitment to them, always bought with intention. When we started dating in college, all their belongings fit in half a checked bag. Blew my mind.

Okay, I had this exact thought as you pointed later in the video --- Having clean looking, premium stuff is what makes us a minimalist. I truly admire the way you have put the core values of minimalism witch such an eloquence. Thank you!

I moved towards it many years ago. I hate owning anything more than I have time for. If I don’t use it regularly I get rid of it. I keep as little possible of a wardrobe I can. Keep my kitchen simple and limited to a few utensils and pots and pans. I don’t care for decorative pieces and I don’t celebrate holidays as I believe they only promote consumption. I tell people not to give me gifts because I don’t want them to burden me with something physical not of my choosing. Therefore I do not give them either because I appreciate the possibility of negative impact. I have no sentimental attachment to things anymore and I don’t allow nostalgia to make me keep things. If someone gives me so much as a card, I will appreciate it, and then most certainly throw it away. I am not keeping an inventory of keepsakes I didn’t ask for. I have a high functioning mind with good memory I don’t need keepsakes. All of these things free up finances to allow you to channel them towards things you are truly passionate about. Many people try to have their hands in too much today, and master nothing. I am happier by choosing a few things I love to do with my time, and focusing all my efforts towards that. I don’t have a Bentley and a mansion but I have some nice roller skates and some camping gear that bring me joy. They keep me healthier than a Bentley and mansion would too. Health is wealth imo and for me minimalism promotes it. If everything I owned went up in flames tomorrow, it would be an inconvenience, but not the emotional loss many would suffer.
