Why do those who look for evidence of a lost advanced civilization look only at similarities in artifacts and ignore differences?

Easy to explain. Some nations had Home Depots, while others had Lowes. Atlantis and Tartaria had exclusive contracts with each.

I think it points to similarities in that they were all human with the same capacity for creativity and engineering. The differences give a window into the history of the inventions and the differences that led to a convergent solution.

It is called "motivated reasoning". All humans do it. The only way to avoid it or at least reduce the effect is to use the scientific method, and peer review process. But these are not perfect either.

BTW, it's weird that the ancient aliens built in stone and mudbrick instead of metal or something.

If the differences are irrelevant, so are the similarities.

The grifters intentionally hide the differences from their audience.

It's like I always say;"a child draws a circle in the sand using a stick in one country, and another child draws a circle in the sand in another country. That's proof of lost high technology."

My favorite human convergent evolution is in language. English and Mbabaram both have "dog" meaning the domesticated wolf.

I think this points to a much greater problem of lacking a frame of reference, to say whether a difference matters or not you need to point to examples where it did/ didn't matter, which mainstream archaeology at least attempts to do.

I don’t think it’ll reach many wanna believers, but I do appreciate your concise demolishing of their positions.

Something I never understood about the "advanced civilizations" is the dearth of alloy metal and synthetic materials. If they were so advanced, why didn't they have glass or iron? Or harness steam?

They do ignore the differences. You can't just be a hack historian. Shocking that there's so many of them

I took as many Miano classes as I could when I was a history major! So glad to see him on social media!

This reminds me of an argument I had with a childhood friend where he claimed that the Japanese invented swords. The fact that eleven year old me could see the flaw in this kind of thinking, but not current day grown ass adults, makes me sad.

Technologies all look the same to them.

Always wondered at these folks pointing out pyramids around the world, plainly ignoring how different these structures were. Mayan pyramids don't look anything like Egyptian pyramids.

Another thing they forget is the spice road. There’s plenty of stuff that I wonder if it was invented independently or followed the spice road.

Yes, your crossbow argument is strong, but I have to comment that both derived from bows. Siberian crossbows were used as a bow-trap, and that origin might have also been the case in both the Chinese and Greek examples.

Tube Drills, Nodular polygonal masonry, the dependance on super huge blocks (and the tech to quarry them and move them). How many points of similarity do you have to have to acknowledge a possible tech exchange?

These are the questions that I subscribe to your channel. There is a phenomenon on this planet where inventions like radio, flight, and nukes happen simultaneously in separate parts of the globe. Your example of the crossbow being invented independently but somewhat similar is news to me. My only question is did the cultures that designed crossbows have any known connections? ❤
