I figured I should make a comment on this!
As of about 2 weeks ago, I am now the proud owner of 3 rats! They're absolutely adorable, and have changed with every passing day as their bond with me has grown.
I do not regret taking them in as pets, but they are definitely a bit different than I was expecting.

They both have distinctive odors too.

Rats actually smell pretty pleasant, which is remarkable considering how much they "marinate" in their nest. At least, assuming they haven't over-marinated themselves.

Ferrets don't smell quite as nice as rats, but it's not entirely unpleasant either. Ferrets smell sort like... um... well... ferrets have a characteristic odor. It's vaguely like corn chips, but musky in a way, maybe kinda waxy. They also have a slight skunky undertone, but really only their faces, which have most of their scent. Honestly, they have an odor that I'd never smelled before. Very different. You might also compare it to some of those artificial room fresheners.

Ferret odor, unlike rats, hangs around wherever they've been. You can tell they've been in a room even hours later. It's not that their odor is especially strong - it's not really any stronger than rats - it's just that it hangs around. I'm told that after the vet does a check up on a ferret, all the dogs that come into that examination room for the rest of the day go nuts trying to figure out what that strange and new smell is! So exciting!

Ferrets are alot of fun like rats are. I remember my pet ferrets loved to hoard things. My ferret, Zoey loved to play with balloons. My cousin had a pet ferret that would take anything shiny, like car keys ... 🙄😋

So cute!

I have a mouse named Parrot. We switched him to hay a few weeks after we first got him and he didn’t like it one bit.
He had a fish hide in with him, and when I went to check on him, he was sitting on top of the coral themed fish hide, sleeping. I have a picture of him lol.

Thanks for that, Esther! ❤️ I just lost my first rat on Saturday. 😞 Thankfully it was just due to old age and natural causes. I held him all day until he passed. My remaining boy, Eddie, is hanging in there. But I’m actively looking to acquire two more boys for us.

Quick question: do rats cry or vocally express their grief? Have you ever observed that in surviving rats after a loss? I know Eddie’s grieving, but he sometimes also makes these weird little whimpering/squeaking noises until I pet and comfort him. I don’t remember him doing this before unless his brother was grooming or agitating him. I’m spending as much time as possible with him right now & spoiling him even more rotten than usual. 🥦🍓🧀 🍕🍝🍪🍩

I bet your rats have never slept through a treat time!

My ferrets, on the other hand, get a jar of turkey baby food as part of their dinner, which they adore (but only the turkey flavor. They tell me "chicky is icky!"). However, someone is inevitably fast asleep and has to be located and physically dragged up out of bed so they don't miss out. They're pretty deep sleepers, with the possible exception of Doolittle, though none of ours have ever gone into the coma-like "dead sleep" than some ferrets are known to.

Judging from what I know about it, the dead sleep is a limited form of torpor, perhaps similar to how squirrels semi-hibernate during the winter. Ferrets are in fact descended from a pretty northerly species, the European Polecat, and do undergo pretty noticeable seasonal changes. In fall and winter, they put on a huge amount of weight (Sherman *doubles* in weight over the winter, going from under 2lb in the summer to close to 4lb in the winter), which they then loose again in the spring and early summer. They also put on a long, thick winter coat. Sherman has fairly light sleek fur in the summer, but is an absolute fluffball in the winter. In addition to putting on all the weight.

The other two don't seem to change as dramatically as Sherman, and it's amazing how Sherman completely dwarfs them in the winter, but is only a little bigger in the summer.
