Oh, and the perfusion index (PI) that most of these devices provide is a really nice way to gauge the quality of the read, as the higher the number the more the finger is being perfused. Typically, if you enter a patient's room and his hands are colder than your ex-wife's voice, you know that no matter how good the oxymeter it's going to display BS and will require you to warm his hands (directly reflected onto the P.I)

I have an out-of-this-world perfusion index (+-17), which is very useful to warm other people's hands --- but in the case of your loved ones you could easily devise a simple "if P.I = low && tempread = THEN turn on heating element"

Nice! If you ever were to iterate on the design: no point in having the scale set to 0-100, 85-100 would make for a higher res quick read. If you're at 85% and non-chronic, your brain is already offline and dying by then anyways
