He is watching everyone try to be something they are not. (Everyone is fake.) He runs away and finds himself to be down to earth. (He finds happiness and comfort in the simplicity of life in love with someone having a child.) He runs back to show everyone he can be just as good as they are. (This is the way the world is. Everyone wants to be someone and wants to appear as if they are special.) He sees what really matters at the end of the video. Not to mention the judges, which are really just everyone around us judging us on a daily basis.

It doesn't matter who we are or what we want to be. He realized true happiness was something greater than being selfish. At least that's what I'm getting...

Amazing metaphor for the smoke and mirrors of the entertainment industry. He is hyping himself up for the proverbial talent show, seeing the inauthentic nature of the stunts the other competitor's are using to win. He rejects it and runs out into the wilderness, connects to his basic need for food and shelter. Finds a woman and falls in love. Even her simple facial features represent the simple lifestyle that he now lives. But watching her and his son dance together triggers something within him and his need to perform and share his art with the world. He runs back knowing that in order to "win" and be a "successful artist" he is going to have to play the game i.e use all of the stunts the other participants used to gain approval. And while it is fake, and he is fully aware of it, he is telling us that he is willing to play the game. Rejecting the potential meager and simple life offered to him by his hypothetical wife and child in the wild, he choses to perform and play for us. Amazing that this is the music video for a popular song that was in an Ikea commercial, a real life manifestation of him playing the game to gain notoriety and success. Beautiful and self aware piece of art

The meaning of the video was pretty straightforward to me. The fact that his dream family faded away in the end clearly highlighted a final point. That by copying the dancers before him to make the judges happy, he sacrificed his own personal happiness. The larger meaning is that it's perfectly fine to be original and not always listen to what society tells us to do. He says 'The more I listen, the deeper I sink'. Deep stuff.

I took an acting class in Austin a couple of years ago, improv to be exact. I'll never forget what the instructor told us on day one, never be afraid to take risks, be bold, take chances and never shy away from an opportunity. Two months ago I got a part in my colleges play, for my audition, I showed up and had nothing to planned. Needless to say I went on that stage and improvised. Now I have a leading role in that very play.

As awesome as the whole metaphor for acceptance and fear of failure as the whole desert scene is, my favorite part is still the "special effects" during the talent show portions. Brilliantly done!

I remember seeing this music video for the first time on MTV as a preteen I fell in love with the sound instantly but haven’t heard it in literally a decade and recently found it again i was searching and only knew the piano keys in the beginning 😭 this song is sucha masterpiece

basically, what this means is that he was doubting himself and his abilities because of other people telling him he couldn't be good enough and could never attain his dreams. they're wrong though, but he can't accept that and that's what stops him from making his dreams come true. so he runs off and he marries and has a child but it's that child that makes him remember his dreams again and he tries to go and get his dreams but it's too late; he can't have his dream without crushing another of his.
