Why is Australia so Under-Populated? #shorts

Australia is a massive country. The 6th largest country in the world, to be exact. Australia has a lot of land, but not a lot of people. Australia's low population can be attributed to the country's arid landscape and extremely dry geography. Most people on the continent decide to live closer to the coastline because of its more temperate climate, and its more livable environment.

Australia’s coastal region is still huge so having a megapolis like Tokyo or New York City could easily support the capacity of a large population. I would say time and geography was a huge factor in shaping the population of Australia today. It differed from the other colonies because it first served as a penal colony so it didn’t experience the mass waves of migration like the USA initially did. Culturally Australia is western but it is geographically isolated from it’s western peers.

I live in Perth, the most remote city in the world. It takes me 4 hours to fly to the east coast. Cheaper and faster to go to another country for a holiday, e.g. Bali is only a 3 hour flight.
The desert is so beautiful and the sunrises/sunsets are stunning. Have travelled all over WA. It's huge!

I always hate the “cause its all mostly desert” argument. We aren’t asking why australia doesn’t have a population of 100+ million, we are asking why its only ~25 mil. When it clearly has the land to support more. Hell, in arable land its 3 times larger than south korea, a country as you said is 2 times it’s population

It’s the same for Canada.. The vast majority of the Canadian population, lives in about four or five cities along the coast and the US/Canadian border.

Time (Australia is a fairly new country)
Position (Australia is far away, so throughout history people have chosen to immigrate to closer regions)
Bad Immigration Policy (previous administrations/cabinets have opposed and ruined our immigration policy to the point that people would rather immigrate to the EU or North America than Australia due to the fact that those countries have better benefits and policies, leaving Australia with a rather aging population and a slowly dwindling skill-base)

As an Australian we learn this throughout multiple grades and also I can never understand why australia seems so dangerous to other people like I can only name a few killer animals
