G&E Shaper Ram Way Wipers & Cross Rail Oil Sight

I finish up the repacking of the oil sights, this time on the cross rail. I also cut and install new felt strips in the wiper holders for the ram ways.
Next video in line will be a discussion on the recommended oil to use, filling it with new oil, and running it!

I'm impressed with just how serious a matter lubrication is on a metal working machine. The designers of
the machine obviously took it very seriously and your remediation of their work has emphasized the matter
for me. I feel a sudden urge to run out to my shop and lubricate all my machines... just in case.

Adam you will probably get tired of me commenting about the shaper. I enjoy seeing the maintenance on the machine almost as much as watching the machine work and the set up of a shaper. Knowing how a machine is built and works goes a long way when it comes to using it. Thanks again for taking the time to show us the maintenance of the shaper.

Step by Step, its getting there! Its good to see someone who likes to look after their equipment to such a standard, after all, look after it - and it'll look after you!
Best of luck Adam.

The coaxial rubber tubes are a clever idea! Very interesting, as always.

Nice job and cleaning her up and getting new wipers on the Shaper, but easy on the Disney Production teasers, you're killing me here. Looking forward to the New Oil flowing through her.
Great job and Thank you for sharing another great Video.
Cheers,
Craig

Loved this video Adam. Thanks for showing the type of oil you are using. I will get some for my little 24 inch model when I go through it. I am learning so much. Thank you!

One of the things my father taught me was that when replacing felts, always saturate the new felt wiper or wick with oil just before installing it. This keeps the wipers from wiping the machine dry before the oil system can get the wick saturated.

Adam, I have a feeling that brass tube was pinched for a reason, my mill has different metering valves for each lubrication point. I think they pinched the tube for the same reason to limit the flow of oil. I may be wrong, just making you aware, and hopefully someone else can chime in as well. Thanks for the videos!

The tube is probably pinched off to build enough pressure to deliver oil to higher points on the machine.

Adam: That nozzle had probably been over lubricating for years and the operator got tired of cleaning up after it so the quickest fix was to beat it closed and then just oil it with an oil can now and then... I see what I was looking at built into the table. It's a tilt set up on the long axis, fore and back. Very slick, my plain table 32"G&E doesn't have any of that. ...Dave

This is another great series, it could go on for years and I wouldn’t complain, I found a south bend 7” for $1500 gonna have to save my pennies

Nice to finally see someone looking after it's long overdue preventative maintenance and giving the old girl a good cleaning Adam. Unless it's been rebuilt at some point and I'd guess it hasn't from it's overall condition, then the oil flaking on the ram dovetail makes it look like it hasn't done very much work. That would have been a very expensive machine when it was brand new.

Looking good. I like the idea of making it a series.

Adam, spray the complete inside of the machine with a cleaning solvent. Afterwards fill the reservoir area at the bottom with that solvent aswell - let the machine run and pump the whole solvent out, let it dry & refill with oil.
