Explore the benefits and potential pitfalls of using computational tools in structural engineering design.

The use of computational tools is growing. Their results inform the everyday creative thought and toolset of structural engineeirng practices, and enable collaboration between engineers and other designers. However, the methodology can also hide an inherent contradiction between creative freedom and practical constraint.

Speaker Stephen Melville draws on his experience to provide an insightful and fascinating discussion of this complex topic.

About the Speaker
Stephen Melville is a Director for Format. Formerly a Director of Whitbybird Engineers then Design Director of Ramboll, Stephen set up Format in 2014 with the goal of establishing an engineering design studio that considers structural engineering, geometry modelling, digital optimisation, fabrication, research and education as a unified discipline.
