I had a major assignment due in one class the week before it was due I had worked every single day and a close friend from high school passed away unexpectedly. I cried for a week strait from being overwhelmed and didn’t finish the assignment. I decided to take the L and get a zero. I had an A and always submitted things early or on time and could afford missing the assignment. I let her know I was sorry for missing the assignment and I had a hard time bouncing back into school after the week I had. She told me I had another week to turn it in and that she was so sorry for my loss and that she believed in me. I’ve never had a teacher be so kind and noticed I was obviously struggling in my life and that I needed more time.

I’m a high school teacher and it is amazing the things my students tell me my colleagues do. I think almost daily “do you even like ‘kids?’ Why don’t you quit?” And I’ve been doing this 21 years, so I’m not just out of college and unrealistically optimistic about the job!

Honestly, this should be more people's philosophy, in *every* endeavor!

this was the main lesson my dad tried to give he said "Ignore everything I've taught you just remember don't be an asshole. I dont care who you end up being just don't be an asshole."

"First Above All: Do No Harm. Do as you will." Translation: You can do whatever you want as long as it doesn't shit it up for other people. I don't... I can't understand how so many people can't wrap their heads around that concept.

Isn't it crazy that THIS IS THE BAR and yet a third of our population misses it by such a large margin?

Empathy, patience, integrity. Not hard, but seem to be rare.

I feel like a lot of managers and CEOs and politicians need to hear and absorb this advice

Wish all my profs lived by this standard. But sadly it’s just not true… 😢

I’ve been doing this, but hearing it laid out that easily is mind blowing—I may have been overthinking some things…

As a teacher who works with adult (aged 19 to 90-something) learners, my general rule of thumb is "Act like an adult and I will treat you like an adult".
I say this as I have had some learners who reverted to the "naughty schoolboy" mentality, i.e. sitting in the back of my classroom while they goofed off making smartass remarks and trying to derail my lesson.
If you wanna learn then come to my class prepared (with computer [I teach IT] and pen & paper [take notes, Imma give you the slideshows but you gotta annotate it] in hand - and if you need glasses then bring them too). I allow coffee & tea (heck, I provide instant coffee [Kenco Gold freezedried instant, add hot water and stir] and tea out of my own pocket) and even allow for snacks and smoke breaks ...
I just ask my learners to show up and try to learn in a respectfuly manner to me, them and their peers ... but if they don't want to learn or to behave in my class, I am happy to show them the door!

That shouldn't just be teaching, that should be life.

Majority of my teachers have this standard, I had one teacher in highschool that was just be kind or be respectful because any rule after that would follow that basis like dont hit each other, no hate speech, listen to the teacher and your classmates, etc. Just let people be, it's the bare minimum in that setting

I saw a church marquee on You Tube once. It read, "Dance. Grow Stuff. Don't be a Dick." This has become my life goal.

About three days before I graduated college with a degree in journalism, the prof for my last class told me I should never go into journalism because I couldn’t handle deadlines and would drag a team down. I didn’t want it to affect me, but it really did a number on my confidence.

My college professors have been so ableist to me. It’s like they have no compassion for students with disabilities. I wish they could see this video LOL
