Understanding Dyspraxia and Autism: Differences and Definitions

The script provides an overview of dyspraxia and autism, emphasizing their nature and impact on individuals. Dyspraxia, often as common as dyslexia but less discussed, involves motor coordination issues and is not tied to intelligence. It is explained as having a 'traffic jam' in conveying information, not to be mistaken with the outdated term 'clumsy disorder'. The discussion then shifts to autism, highlighted as a significant condition that affects communication (both verbal and non-verbal), repetition, and a process-oriented approach. The script indicates the evolution of terminology in the autism spectrum, from the use of terms like Asperger's and high or low functioning to the now preferred Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

It’s great to hear someone actually talk about dyspraxia, I have dyspraxia and nobody ever takes it seriously or has any idea what I’m talking about.

I'm in the US and the way I describe my son's thought process is that he has the same destination as everyone else, but instead of his road map having a good layout, like NY city streets, his streets are haphazardly laid out more like Boston. Another analogy is instead of the ball of yarn fresh from the store, you let a toddler play with it first. You can get there it just takes longer. The bonus is that you can come up with some incredibly creative things with all that extra processing.
