The Italian coast guard rescued 17 migrants, Monday, July 13, six of them from the waters near the island of Lampedusa.

Italy is facing another migrant surge, with almost a third more arrivals than this time last year, according to interior ministry data. The migrant surge is more challenging this year as Italy continues to recover from the coronavirus outbreak.

Interior ministers from several countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, met via video conference to strengthen migration law enforcement cooperation through police training and equipment funding, Italy's interior ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement new guidelines for dealing with the crisis will be implemented within a few months. (AFP)

Look at a map: Lampedusa is much close to Africa than it is to Europe, so transfer or give lampedusa to libya or tunisia - which are african countries. once this occurs the incentive for illegals to flock there will be removed as now the island will be part of would risk their lives just end up back in Africa?
