MPs approve legislation to release thousands of prisoners who have served 40% of sentence

MPs have approved legislation which will kickstart the government's plan to release thousands of offenders early in a bid to tackle overcrowding in prisons.

Starting in September, some non-violent prisoners will be eligible for release after they have served 40% of their sentence.

It is Labour's first step towards tackling a system in crisis - with nearly a quarter of prisoners living in crowded conditions, violence at a post-pandemic high and self-harm rates at record levels.

I would suggest sueing any MP who voted to release the prisoners early if the person commits an offence against a member of the public. MPs need to be held accountable for their actions as well.

Happened before under labour. They release 1000s of prisoners and didn't inform probation, police, communities etc. Crime mayhem.

The present government could do something long term: they could start by building a new prison, and refurbishing the old one!
Staff need to have better working conditions. Instead, they are being exposed to sewage, rats, etc.
