animated characters' coming out scenes

This is a compilation I made because I love that we're getting more queer rep in animation these days! (It also served as a thank you for over 500 subscribers!)

These are all the coming out scenes I've seen in animation. There are many queer animated characters who never have coming out scenes, and that's cool too, but there's something important about showing these moments where characters share their truth with the world (particularly when words like 'gay', 'bi' and 'trans' are actually used in kids' shows - shout out to Kipo, The Owl House, and Dead End: Paranormal Park!)

Obviously, we still have a looong way to go, particularly with all the cancellations (so mad we lost Dead End), but it's cool to see how far we've come, even if it's overdue - all these scenes happened in the 2020s! (Benson and May in 2020, and the rest in 2022).

All the shows, characters and identities are shown in the video, but here are a few extra notes:
– Benson's and Yaz's scenes were originally much longer, but the video got copyright-blocked on the basis of them, so I cut them short, added background music, and flipped the Camp Cretaceous scenes to (hopefully) avoid this happening again. Sorry everybody, copyright sucks :/
– I'm aware that Barney's scene might not *technically* be a coming out scene, given that he says 'everyone at school knows' and Norma goes to school with him, but it definitely feels like one, and was the moment he came out to the audience, so I thought it was a valid one to include!
– I put Yaz as 'mspec' (an umbrella term for people attracted to multiple genders!) because she hasn't been specifically labelled as anything, as far as I know!
– The second Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous scene also features Sammy Gutierrez, another canon sapphic character and Yaz's girlfriend, but it's unclear whether or not she was already out! (Whereas Yaz canonically wasn't until the scene we see in the show, so that scene serves as her coming out to her mother!)
– The audio in the second Camp Cretaceous scene also might confuse anyone who hasn't watched, but basically that scene is part of the ending montage and has a voiceover of Darius, another main character, talking about dinosaurs.
– I extended Norma's first scene to include the bit where she admits she has a crush, not just where she says she's bi, because she accidentally reveals who it is and so technically tells Logs she likes girls before she actually *tells* him. Also, it's an important part of the whole conversation!

As always, I own nothing except the editing. The clips come from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, RWBY, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, The Owl House, Wendell & Wild, and The Dragon Prince.

I like how everyone here is kinda reluctant and scared to come out and then Luz is just like "oh bi the way I'm bi" and then Gus pulls out the rainbows. people shouldn't have to feel the need to be scared of coming out and Luz is a perfect example of that.

Edit: a lot of people are saying “well that’s not how it is in real life, being scared of coming out is valid”. This is true, however, in my original comment I meant that in an ideal world, people wouldn’t have to be scared of coming out. We do not live in an ideal world, so there are many justified fears in coming out, but Luz’s coming out is exactly what an ideal world’s coming out would look like. Sorry for the lack of clarification.

I genuily loved how the Owl house portrayed Luz and Amity. There was no focus on it being special or wrong, but instead on their actual relationship developing, and their own character stories. We need more natural representation.
I hope the next generation experience their romantic identies without ever feeling like their in the wrong.

The fact that homophobia doesn't exist in the isles so Amity and Gus are probably confused as to why Luz feels the need to tell her mom but they're going along with it because it makes her happy sends me.

Definitely Norma's coming out scene with her mom. That scene right there is something everyone deserves to have when they are scared to come out to their Moms or to their Dads or to anyone close to them really.

I absolutely love Luz's coming out scene, while everyone else is scared or reluctant to come out, Luz just shows her mom the Lumity PowerPoint with a smile on her face and ends with "Hi, I'm Bi".

Honestly an underrated coming out scene is in the Rocko's modern life Netflix special, when they've been looking for "Ralph" for ages but then she's like "I'm not Ralph anymore, I'm Rachel" and everyone is just instantly supportive like "Wow that's so cool"

The "I'm bi, I dont think I have ever said that out loud before" is so accurate. I Really need to watch paranormal park as soon as possible, I think this might just be the spark, but everything about this character is so accurate, just saying it out loud feels so good, the first person I cane out to was my cat <3
