Square Feet vs. Square Yard: What is the difference in figuring carpet? #capellflooring #carpetmath

Often, carpet and sheet vinyl are sold by the square yard rather than by the square foot. There is sometimes confusion on how to figure that out, so here is a quick lesson for doing "flooring math."
To get square yards, it is 3 x 3, not 3 x 1, which many people think.

Here is an example if you have an area that is 12 ft x 100 ft - to get square feet, you take the 1200 sf and then divide by 9 (not 3) to get the square yardage, so in this example, 133.33 sy is the total. Do not divide by 3.

The confusion comes in when you go to a "Box Store" and the carpet is priced at $5.00 per square foot. A comparable by the square yard is 5 x 9 = $45 per square yard. Many people go $5.00 x 3, which isn't correct.

Just remember that you divide the square footage by 9, which is comparable.

Here are a few more examples:

$3.50 sf = $31.50 sy

$4.75 sf = $42.75 sy

$2.25 sf = $20.25 sy

1250 sf = 138.88 sy

1725 sf = 191.66 sy
